Bad driving may have genetic basis
Bad driving may have genetic basis

IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Bad driving may be genetic and 30 percent of U.S. adults have the gene variant, U.S. researchers suggest.

Neuroscientists at the University of California, Irvine, said people people with a particular gene variant performed more than 20 percent worse on a driving test than people without it -- and a follow-up test a few days later yielded similar results.

Senior author Dr. Steven Cramer, a neurology associate professor, said about 30 percent of Americans have the variant.

"These people make more errors from the get-go, and they forget more of what they learned after time away," Cramer said in a statement.

The driving test was taken by 29 people -- 22 without the gene variant and seven with it. They were asked to drive 15 laps on a simulator that required them to learn the nuances of a track programmed to have difficult curves and turns.

swerving out of the way of female drivers.

Heh

Of course if you were to take that same premise, that men are hardwired to be risk takers, and apply it to some other data set, say success in the business world, you'd have people screaming "sexism" from the top of their lungs.

23. Well, true -- males are pretty bad. Especially here in Texas.
Males with GREAT BIG pickups are the worst.

25. nope worse drivers on the road are without a doubt
soccer moms in minivans.. ive had them go across 4 lanes of traffic at once almost wiping me out, and the obligatory stop in the travel lanes when they get pulled, move to the shoulder for gawds sake... but women driving minivans win hands down...

4. the sample size was far to small to make any such conclusion
I support identifying all factors that describe elements of risk, insurance by its very nature is not egalitarian.

8. Yeah, 29 people
only 7 in the control group.

For something as complex as driving you would need a much larger sample size. A thousand or more.

9. Ah but how do you differentiate genetics in that scenario
from environment? They could have simply been taught to drive poorly and saw no reason to change as everyone in their family did the same.

11. True. One sibling was teaching another sibling how to drive in an empty parking lot--
somehow they totaled a Datsun in the process.

16. That reminds me of teaching my daughter to drive a stick in a parking lot..
She got the front wheels up against a speed bump and killed the engine about twenty or thirty times trying to get over it..

When I couldn't contain my amusement any longer she got mad and jumped out of the truck.. :)

Edited on Thu Oct-29-09 05:15 PM by Regret My New Name
;) At least you were just laughing... My parents scarred me for life. My father was too damn impatient and seemed to have expected me to be able to do it without any screwing up... My mother would freak out about anything and everything. Which pretty much made me think that if I pressed the gas pedal I would die, along with everyone around me... Even though I got my license at 17, I didn't really start driving until I was 21 after my sister in law helped me get over the damage my parents done.
