Mia Hamm ambassador for women's 2011 World Cup

Associated Press - October 29, 2009 10:24 AM ET

FRANKFURT (AP) - Former U.S. captain Mia Hamm, a 2-time world player of the year, has been appointed international ambassador for the 2011 women's World Cup in Germany.

She was officially presented Thursday, ahead of an exhibition between United States and Germany in Augsburg.

The 37-year-old Hamm says she's "convinced that the tournament will set new benchmarks."

Hamm won the World Cup in 1991 and 1999, as well as gold medals at the 1996 and 2004 Olympics. She was voted FIFA Women's World Player of the Year in 2001 and 2002.

1. I'd of picked Julie Foudy. Hamm is often awkward socially. But I'm sure she'll do okay. nt

2. A great athlete... good for her!
Her accomplishments, as well as several of her teammates throughout the years, have been nothing short of inspirational for aspiring female athletes. I have to say, hands down, that the 1999 World Cup was one of the proudest moments in women's team sports (for me, at least). I remember tuning in and seeing the Rose Bowl packed to the gills. I had never seen this type of backing and enthusiasm for a women's team in my life (short of Olympic events)... it was truly a great moment.
