Robert Crumb's new 'Book Of Genesis' is amazing.

Robert Crumb’s new Illustrated Genesis is brilliant, beautiful, and thought-provoking. Never seen anything like it. It’s officially Freaking Me Out ™.

It’s both disturbingly revealing of the origins of Christianity, and somehow Christianitically compelling. Robert Crumb not only still has it — this is among his greatest efforts. My God. Oops.

Amazon is selling this for $13.72 for the moment, cover price over $25. It’s a georgeous collector’s item. I don’t understand. But you can’t have mine. I love it.

Christians should find this utterly fascinating, I believe, and not at all threatening or demeaning to their beliefs.

Crumb states in the foreword that his intent was purely to illustrate, not to demean or polemicize.

1. Was Eve a bodybuilder?
That cover has her with muscular legs and big boobs. They had implants in the garden of eden?

4. well, that's partly Crumb's bent
He loves him some big-legged, ample-busted women... so I'm sure he imagines the first woman as the prototype for female perfection as he sees it.

And wasn't there a thread on here recently about how much stronger prehistoric people were than we are now, despite them being shorter?

7. He's a bit of a misogynist..
and Christianity is a misogynistic religion, so I can see the connection.

8. Yeah, that explains the veneration of Mary.
They totally hate women. Gotta love DU's religion scholars, lol.

12. I would say his critical eye applies to men and women pretty much equally.
Also to a wide range of ideas, beliefs, customs and attitudes. He tends to be skeptical and critical. I don't really buy the misogyny charge, unless you also mention misanthropy, distrust of cats, dogs, cockroaches, elephants, religion, science, zen and everything else and nothingness as well.

You're welcome to be offended by Crumb, but I think you should consider that lots and lots of people are offended, not just you. I personally find it more effective to learn from his point of view than to take offense. Most of the time. Sometimes he just pisses me off.

Christianity, on the other hand, as well as Judaism (Genesis is more Jewish than Christian, I think) I agree are essentially religions of male domination and primacy.

9. I don't think his choice has much to do with an attempt to promote religion
From what I've read, Crumb considered taking a satirical approach to illustrating Genesis but decided in the end, "Fuck it. I'll do it straight".

Genesis is a hell of a read - sex, violence, a cruel and jealous God. I hope someday I can afford to get a copy of Crumb's version.

11. It's under $14 on Amazon now, plus shipping, for the hardback.
Probably will never be more affordable, unless it gets remaindered or something.

10. He isn't religious, apparently.
There's a recent interview with him on NPR somewhere where they asked him about that. He said that he sees Genesis as a wellspring of culture and storytelling, but doesn't actually believe in it.
