John Wayne was a WW2 Draft Dodger
The great Republican Icon John Wayne was a good for nothing coward! My dad, a veteran of the war, hated John Wayne!

I'm afraid I don't know what the draft-age was at the time, but he had to have been at the high end already when our involvement began.

And didn't he have like three kids at the time? If that made any difference...

I've been reading John Wayne's wiki entry, and it has a summary of the controversy. His exemption form service due to age and 3-A family status would both seem to disqualify him as a "draft dodger," regardless of the commendable service of your father and many others.

Additionally, Wayne was apparently threatened with legal action if he abandoned his contract with Republic Studios.

Hey, I'm no apologist for Wayne. I can't stand to watch more than five minutes of him onscreen because his typical film persona embodies just about everything I detest in that dinosaur model of American Maleness.

But it's not as though he got out because of an anal cyst.

But he didn't have to enlist at all, he had served 4 years in the navy in the 30's. BTW, my mom was also a navy nurse from 1942 to 45. So I think they more than took up the slack for the likes of John Wayne.

47. He was reclassified 1A but was reclassified 2A at the request of the studio.
According to his last wife, number three, he regretted having not served. It appears that he talked big about joining but never actually pursued it and let his studio get him deferments. He had his share of faults and was considered to be a mean drunk. His interview with "Playboy" in 1971 revealed that he was nothing more than a racist. He went as far as endorsing slavery saying to the effect that they were better off than living in the native countries. He scorned the native Americans saying that if we continued down the path to socialism that we would be like the native Americans living on reservations. He was a fruitcake and praised McCarthy for his anti-communist witch hunts. Just another Republican chicken hawk who support the Viet Nam war. Typical Hollywood with his personal life being less than admirable.

33. All that means
is that your family tree bought the same BS hype that's been going around for so many years.

MY father, also a decorated Vietnam Vet, knew an entirely different man than the internet nonsense that so many subscribe to pictures.

Wayne did not author his deferments. As a matter of fact, Ford himself was involved in the commercial pressure that was placed on Wayne when he DID fight the deferments. Although it could be argued that Wayne shoulda/coulda fought harder, it's pretty hypocritical to use Ford's assessment as your argument.

And it's ironic that you bring up Ford's opinion of Wayne, because there was a fair bit of animosity between the two over Wayne's dismissal of the recognition he (Wayne) was to receive for civilian service (Which was probably no more or less dangerous than shooting films from cover). Especially seeing as Ford's service might as well have been civilian, when you consider what he actually did.

I have a bit of an personal interest here in that of the four veterans mentioned between the two of us so far, one had the chance to spend nearly 45 minutes with the man. He described him as "Amazingly humble and down to earth, and almost reverent toward fighting men. 'I didn't do what I thought I should and I wish I had. All I can do now is try to do something.' (Wayne)" I'll give you three guesses which of the four it was, but I bet you'll only need one. My father considered that one of the best human interactions he'd ever had (Although it certainly wasn't just him there, as I recall it was a group of about 25).

Wayne spent most of the rest of his life portraying our forces in a positive light while everyone else was knocking them down.

It's easy to buy into the hype, and it'a a shame your family did. As far as your use of the term "Pussied Out," you're full of shit, and of your family, my dad and I, you seem to be the only one who has never had to fight. You ought not be so quick to judge.

Look at these three spoiled brats. Can you imagine that they went to a foreign country and said they were ashamed our President was from Texas? One might argue that they have the right to say anything they want to. I agree, they do. However it should cost them more then it seems to. I don't believe I've ever heard them sing and so I can't say I don't like their singing. So simply put, "I'm ashamed they're from America"

12. Oh yea, he was a piece of shit all right....
The film's screenplay by Carl Foreman , written during a politically-oppressive atmosphere in the early 1950s when McCarthyism and political persecution were rampant, was loosely adapted from a Collier's Magazine story The Tin Star (by John W. Cunningham) published in December 1947. In fact, the film's story has often been interpreted as a morality play or parable, or as a metaphor for the threatened Hollywood blacklisted artists (one of whom was screenwriter Foreman) who faced political persecution from the HUAC during the McCarthy era due to actual or imagined connections to the Communist Party, and made life-altering decisions to stand their ground and defend moral principles according to their consciences.

Wayne is rumoured to have tried to sway fellow conservative Gary Cooper from appearing in the movie because it was supposedly "liberal"...

I guess he eventually quit when they started in on the "fluoridation is a Communist plot" BS. At least that's the story he gave--too conservative even for him. My dad says the Birchers wiped him out financially via theft, but I haven't ever been able to dig up any references regarding that.

17. He said "I never saw John Wayne on the sands of Iwo Jima"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJqX0zC00gU

George A. was at the movies in December '41
They announced it in the lobby what had just gone on
He drove up from Birmingham back to the family's farm
Thought he'd get him a deferment there's was much work to be done
He was a family man, even in those days
But Uncle Sam decided he was needed anyway
In the South Pacific over half a world away
He believed in God and Country, things was just that way

Just that way…..

When I was just a kid I spent every weekend
On the farm that he grew up on so I guess so did I
And we'd stay up watching movies on the black and white TV
We watched "The Sands of Iwo Jima" starring John Wayne

Every year in June George A. goes to a reunion
Of the men that he served with and their wives and kids and grandkids
My Great Uncle used to take me and I'd watch them recollect
about some things I couldn't comprehend

And I thought about that movie, asked if it was that way
He just shook his head and smiled at me in such a loving way
As he thought about some friends he will never see again
He said "I never saw John Wayne on the sands of Iwo Jima"

Most of those men are gone now but he goes still every year
And George A's still doing fine, especially for his years
He's still living on that homestead in the house that he was born in
And I sure wish I could go see him today

He never drove a new car though he could easily afford it
He'd just buy one for the family and take whatever no one wanted
He said a shiny car didn't mean much after all the things he'd seen
George A. never saw John Wayne on the sands of Iwo Jima

John Wayne did his best to avoid military service in WWII. He was a hawk on Vietnam, and hated the left.
Reagan made movies in California during the war while in the Army, James Stewart served in the Army Air Corps as a bomber pilot, David Niven returned to England from Hollywood to serve in the British Army with Ian Fleming in military intelligence.
Old Leftie Dashiell Hammett served as an Army sergeant in Alaska, editing a base newspaper.
Richard Nixon served as Navy Supply officer on an island in the Pacific where he was known as a prick and a nasty poker player - he made a lot of money there.

46. It's an urban legend.
He was actually too old to be drafted when the draft first started. Then, by the time the draft expanded to fit his age bracket, it was 1944 and I believe the studio he was shooting a movie with got him out of draft eligibility. I think he was under contract with the studio. He never dodged the draft: He was never even eligible to be drafted.

50. You are wrong
when you say that he was not eligible to be drafted since he was reclassified 1A in 1944 and he "allowed" the studio to get him reclassified. If he had desired to serve he could have resisted the studio's efforts. He went along with them and as he admitted he regretted it.

57. Whether or not he could be drafted is irrelevant.
He may have been too old to be drafted, but he was not too old to enlist. He was a year older than Jimmy Stewart, who went and fought. John Ford was seven years older. Glenn Ford was a year older. Gene Autry was his age. He went. Henry Fonda, two years older. Clark Gable, six years older. They, and many more from Hollywood all had no problems enlisting and going into combat, and they were all in the same age range as John Wayne. Instead, as you point out, he let the studio get him out of serving. Throughout the war, he made excuses to keep himself out of harm's way, such as alleged lawsuits for breach of contract. No studio owner in his right mind would have sued ANYONE to keep them from going off to that war, and risk the massive public outrage. He could have broken or suspended his contract. He didn't.

52. and a drunk
The Republicans in my area STILL hold him up as an ideal. Fact is, they confuse his roles with who HE was. They are always believing in fictions (FOX viewers for the most part) than realities that are biting them in the butt.

66. Technically no.... he utilized a legal loophole ..
he was a father of 4 at that time... to avoid the draft process.

Also pissed John Ford off for using that loophole.

67. He was booed on a troop ship
because the troops saw him making war films while they were actually doing the fighting and dying. Still, he's a status symbol for the shallow minded. I saw a 'God bless John Wayne' bumper sticker yesterday. We have so many airhead citizens. Personally, I like his old western movies and bear no ill will against him. It's just so idiotic that the RWs have idolized him as a symbol of something.
