About the Listerine Agent Cool Blue recall- this is fucked up.

This is about the kid's product that has been very quietly recalled, with minimal media exposure.
They have quietly published a 'voluntary recall' (which pretty much all recalls are).

The recall hotline tells you nothing but how to get a new bottle, and if it is safe to buy again.

I called the parent company (McNeil-PPC, subsidiary of J&J). The 'micro-organisms' that they do not readily identify are the following:

Pseudomonas fluorescens
klebsiella oxytoca
serratia marcescens
enterobacter cloacae

These can be nasty stuff, esp #2.

I am personally concerned, as my son was taking this stuff through an allergic reaction, the flu, and what looked like strep (but wasn't) all in the last month.

I know many parents on DU have also bought this, just wanted to pass the info along.

3. I just sent in refund requests for the two bottles that we had at my house.
It is a quiet recall, and it's not easy to get information about exactly what the problem is. I guess in otherwise healthy children the risk in practically non-existent, the biggest threat appears to be for people with compromised immune systems.

4. My daughter had this for her children, thankfully they hadn't used it
for quite some time and she threw it away, disturbing all these recalls lately, makes you wonder what should be recalled but hasn't been.

5. i just refuse to buy the crap they push on the tube. It's all consumerism
BS designed to sell you something you and your kids don't need, but you end up thinking you want it.

I'm amazed still, after all these years that they can actually still sucker people into buying utterly useless crap because they push it on TV.

The stuff people need, actually need, they don't advertise much, because they don't have to. You will buy it anyway, because you need it. I don't see many commercials for carrots on TV, for instance. Or cabbage.

Ever stop to ask yourself why you bought that crap in the first place? Recall or not?

There ain't no damn cat and there ain't no damn cradle.

8. I bought that 'crap' for my son-
because it is helpful for him to learn how to brush his teeth more completely.

Thanks for putting the blame on the parent though. Very nice.

10. I'm a single parent of 3, oldest is 12 How did we parents get by before J&J came along and
sold us something? I just looked up the product and I think it's designed to get kids in the habit of using mouth wash, so they can get in the habit of buying it for life. I think mouth wash is a scam, in that it kills all the bacteria it can reach in your mouth, both the good and the bad. It contributes over time to resistent bacteria and it only kills some but not all of the tooth decay/bad breath bacteria so it comes back quicky.

However, I was a bit harsh toward you and I apologize. Please forgive my anti-consumerism zeal.

Here's a hot tip about something that's not being advertised at the moment, but it's pretty cool thing for parents (and everybody) to know. My dental hygienist told me about it.

Ever hear of xylitol? It's an alcohol sugar discovered and first produced in Finland from birch bark.
Many foods have very small amounts in them naturally, such as raspberries.

It actually stops and reverses tooth decay, because the bacteria that causes tooth decay (and bad breath) likes it. But it doesn't provide an adequate food source for that bacteria and it kills it for that reason. It's not an antibiotic or anti bacterial, it's a sugar that is diabetic safe,(doesn't require insulan to matabolize) it tastes great (tastes like sucrose, or table sugar) it's got 1/3 the calories of sugar and it's got several other amazing properties.

My hygienist says if a person dissolves a mint in your mouth sweetened with xylitol 3 times a day for two years, that after two years use you won't get cavities for the next five years, even if you don't continue to use the xylitol.

It also increases bone density. And use of xylitol has proven to cut the incidence of nasal and upper respiratory infections.

You can find it in some natural food stores/health food stores and on the net. It can be purchased in granulated form, as a powder, or in mints and chewing gum.

It's suitable for everything except baking with yeast, because it inhibits yeast growth for the same reason it inhibits the growth of the bacteria that cause tooth decay and bad breath.

11. That's good to know. Thanks for the tip.
I'm one of those that don't care much for mouthwash. I don't need it (at least I don't think I do). Brushing should be sufficient enough.

13. Right. It is not mouthwash as we think of it.
It makes teeth blue so kids can tell where they brushed.
It was recommended to us by his dentist, not the TV.

I join you in your anti-consumer zeal. I own chickens for God's sake.

Nice sales pitch for xylitol though. Oh wait, dont you have to BUY it?!

Just giving you crap (it's the DU way!)
Peace my brother.

the previous version was crap. And the current one probably is too.

15. There was a bottle of this sitting on the shelf at my daughter's orthodontist office
on Friday. They hadn't heard of the recall, so I'd guess a lot of kids are still using contaminated bottles of this stuff. Because it's sold for kids, it contains no alcohol (which would probably I'm guessing kill some of these bugs).

17. I usually stick with "Tom's of Maine"
For toothpaste, mouthwash, etc. It tastes good and doesn't have any artificial ingredients or alcohol. I haven't seen it advertised, but then I avoid MSM.

I think I read recently they'd been bought up by one of the major brands. Tell me it ain't so.

Edited on Wed Apr-18-07 01:50 PM by Horse with no Name
I am getting tired of this.
My granddaughter uses this and we have just got through a couple of serious sinus/throat infections that haven't responded well to the antibiotics and her tonsils have been so swollen she is probably going to have to get them out.
It is lot #91436L. Is there any word on which ones are affected?

22. I think this is correct. Every bottle.

The problem seems to be the lack of alcohol.
This is why i keep myself properly infused with alcohol when possible.
