An assault that took place Friday evening prompted the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office to increase security Monday at Lee-Davis High School.
Around 6:30 p.m., a 15-year-old from Mechanicsville struck another Mechanicsville male with an ax, causing a laceration to the left side of his face. The incident occurred inside Tractor Supply in the 7000 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike.
The 15-year-old was charged with aggravated malicious wounding.
Hanover County Commonwealth’s Attorney R.E. “Trip” Chalkley III said on Monday that his office would seek transfer of the accused to Circuit Court for trial. “Based on the evidence at this time, it is my inclination to seek trial as an adult.”
Chalkley did say the incident was caught on video.
He also said that an “effective and efficient investigation” will continue. “Obviously, additional facts may come to light which could change the posture of the case.”

Aggravated malicious wounding carries from 20 years to life in prison, but there is wide discretion for judges to handle a juvenile charged as an adult.
The attack Friday evening at Tractor Supply Co. in the Hanover Village Shopping Center across Mechanicsville Turnpike from the high school was captured on a video camera, Chalkley said. The only camera visible in the store is directly above a display of axes, hatchets and splitting mauls.
In the video, Chalkley said the attacker appears to make one stroke with a single-bladed ax toward the victim, also 15, who was facing his assailant.
