Poll question: Who knows what a bonobo is?
I'm taking a poll to find out how many people know what bonobos are.

I've found knowledge of bonobos to be almost non-existent regardless of a persons level of education. This is pretty amazing, given our vast knowledge of so many different things. And knowledge of bonobos would seem to be something humans would, and should have, but many don't apparently.

(by the way, a band or a software program isn't the correct answer for this poll)

From what (admittedly) little I know of them, they seem to have a similar social structure to chimps but are less aggressive.

How's that?

19. Close. They are one of humans closest relatives. They have the only known matriarchal
social structure among primates.

And they make love, not war.

Like humans, they are perhaps the only other creatures who are sexually receptive at all times, regardless of estrus. They use sex toys.

36. I'm impressed with how many DUers know about bonobos. They are
the closest living relatives to humans. But for some reason they aren't all that common knowledge. We all know about harp seals, my grade school kids can tell me about various whales and there habits and ranges, we have all heard about and seen chimps, but it was only 10 years ago that I found out about bonobos. I was in my early forties at the time. I heard nothing in college courses about our closest relatives. Never saw the non-existent National Geographic or animal world tv special about them.

If I went and asked my neighbors about bonobos my guess is that they've never heard of them. I've asked wildlife biologists about bonobos and they have never heard of them.

They are physically closer to humans than chimps. They are also the only creatures I know of besides humans who have sex when not in estrus, and have all kinds of different permutations of sex, including partners of either sex, different sex positions, and sex toys.

They could be called tri-sexual, as in they try anything.

They use sex as a means of resolving social tension, instead of aggression.

As I said, I'm impressed that DUers are so informed.

The only reason to know about them is to know more about humans. I've seen videos on aggression that use chimps as models for human society, etc, but never bonobos. It's like it's been taboo in educational circles or something.

31. Hey, they're Democrats. ....Series!!11!!!111!!
Bonobos
are humankind's closest relatives, along with chimpanzees, yet most people don't even know that bonobos exist! They live only in one country: the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Bonobos were last great ape species to be discovered, and could be the first to go extinct if we do not act quickly to save them and their rainforest home. Bonobos stand apart from the other great apes in fascinating and important ways. But perhaps the most compelling aspect of bonobos is their society ...

Tarzan's Cheetah celebrates 75th birthday with cake, soda

Apr 11, 2007, 10:24 GMT

Los Angeles - Cheetah, the chimpanzee who starred in the Tarzan movies in the 1930s and who is considered the world's oldest chimp, has celebrated his 75th birthday.

Cheetah, whose coat is now peppered with grey hair, marked the occasion with a party featuring sugar-free cake and diet soda in the California desert town of Palm Springs, famous as a retirement community for old movie stars. He has lived there with his trainer for the last 16 years.

Chimpanzees rarely live past their 40s in the wild but often live into their 60s in captivity. According to his trainer, Dan Westfall, Cheetah's only health problem is that he has been diabetic for about seven years.

Cheetah was brought from Liberia in 1932 as a baby and made his movie debut in 1934. He starred in about a dozen Tarzan films and retired from his film career after appearing in the 1967 picture Dr Doolittle.

Pacifist, matriarchal, bisexual sex maniacs - what's not to love about them? It's too bad that even though they're so close to us genetically there is such a gulf between our behaviours. It kinda makes you wonder if evolution does sometimes work in reverse, and H. Sap. actually slipped back down off the great-ape peak just a little.
