The Club as a steering wheel lock?
We believe we have the need for one and purchased one made by Master Lock. Anyone had any experiences with these things? It seems to do what it is intended to do but surely its not fool proof. It would also make an excellent swinging weapon.

1. A hacksaw cuts through a steering wheel rather quickly.

19. Bingo. If you really want to prevent people from stealing your car...
...take the central cable from your distributer cap with you.

2. If they really want your car they will break the windshield, which will allow
them to steer just fine even with the club on.

3. I used one, way back when.
Naturally they don't make your car theft-proof. But the whole name of the game is to make your car LESS appealing than the one next to it, and a Club does that just fine.

12. Its for my wife's car and I told
her it might not be foolproof but it will at least slow someone down. Something akin to having a frothing pitbull in the back seat. And, as you say, if you are in a crowded parking lot there would most likely be easier pickings. Thanks for the vote of confidence. My wife had an incident last week and she's still a little distressed.

17. Don't discount the idea of a big dog in the back...
I virtually NEVER go out alone at night without my big girlie dog in the back seat. I may not have the statistics to prove it, but nonetheless I am convinced that anyone who might want to carjack will pass my car by. Even if they aren't afraid of the dog, it does complicate things so why not pick the next car...

16. yeah... good deterrent...
Seems to me that there were Clubs that were a bit heavier duty than the standard that I used to use on a Jeep Cherokee I used to own. But, seeing the club sends a signal that it will be a bit "slower going" and thus higher risk of being caught in the act.

4. Make a great bludgeon.
That said, it can be defeated. How? They just cut the steering wheel.

A hidden, remote switch(or wireless remote kill switch) is always good. Lojack is also good. You get an insurance break or having them.

20. A somewhat funny, but effective solution for some:

I have several friends who worked in really high crime areas in several leading cities... While none of them were stupid enough to drive around in a really expensive new car, nonetheless, they swore by one trick that seemed to protect them from theft, when similar cars parked near them were nabbed.

Their trick? Let your car become unappealing with clutter, garbage, whatever--seriously! We're talking MAJORLY cluttered with empty food sacks, old newspapers, doggie beds, whatever and let the dust pile up on the dashboard! Some of their cars would take 20 minutes of "bull-dozing" before they could take a passenger (and they got few requests for those--LOL)!

While this would be horribly embarrassing if you were taking "clients" around or trying to impress that new girlfriend, it did allow them to keep hold of their cars in a very high risk setting, without investing in a very expensive LoJack or other anti-theft system.

7. My DH bought one after his truck was broken into, and
we haven't had a repeat performance. Of course, you have to use it for it to work.

where some little old lady had somebody try to carjack her as she unlocked it. She beat the crap out of him with it-he was happy to see the police arrive.

9. It will deter the thief most of the time
because of the time it will take to saw the thing off or bust the lock. Not bad for about a $10 investment :)

10. In a lot full of cars
a thief looking for a ride will chose one he can get away with most quickly. Most kids looking for a joyride will choose one they can get into, pop the lock, cross the wires, and start immediately.

If you have a car that is targeted by professional thieves looking for overseas fences and local chop shops, I'd advise you to get a more serious system.

23. All they do is make it difficult or impossible to turn the steering wheel.

Your steering column lock has to be broken (obviously) but, like it has been mentioned, a hacksaw goes through a steering wheel pretty quick, then the thief just yanks the thing off and away he goes.

18. I have one.
It seems to be great for deterrant, if nothing else. I live in Philly, so I use mine every time I park. I think if car thieves see one, they'd be more likely to pass to the next car.
