4 Bombings in Baghdad Kill at Least 178 People As Violence Escalates in Iraqi Capital

By SINAN SALAHEDDIN

BAGHDAD Apr 18, 2007 (AP)—

Four large bombs exploded in mostly Shiite areas of Baghdad on Wednesday, killing at least
178 people and wounding scores the deadliest day in the city since the start of the U.S.-Iraqi
campaign to pacify the capital two months ago.

Residents run away from the scene following an explosion in
Sadr City district of Baghdad, Iraq, Wednesday, April 18, 2007.
A suicide car bomber crashed into an Iraqi checkpoint at an
entrance to Sadr City, killing at least 30 and wounding 45 in
the capital's largest Shiite Muslim area, police said.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates called the bombings "horrifying" and accused al-Qaida
of being behind them.

In the deadliest of the attacks, a parked car bomb detonated in a crowd of workers at the
Sadriyah market in central Baghdad, killing at least 122 people and wounding 148, said Raad
Muhsin, an official at Al-Kindi Hospital where the victims were taken.

A police official confirmed the toll, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not
authorized to release the information.

Among the dead were several construction workers who had been rebuilding the mostly Shiite
marketplace after a bombing destroyed many shops and killed 137 people there in February,
the police official said.

The laborers typically finish work around 4 p.m. each day. One of those wounded, 28-year-old
Salih Mustafa, said he was waiting for a minibus to head home when the blast went off at 4:05 p.m.

"I rushed with others to give a hand and help the victims," he said. "I saw three bodies in a
wooden cart, and civilian cars were helping to transfer the victims. It was really a horrible scene."

17. It IS funding the war!
The current situation as of April, 2007 is that the U.S. House of Representatives and the
U.S. Senate have each passed versions of the Supplemental Appropriations Bill that
provide funding for President Bush to continue the U.S. military occupation of Iraq. The
House and Senate Leadership will select a “Conference Committee” that will hammer out a
compromise bill. That bill will then be voted on by the full House and Senate, and sent to
President Bush. At this point President Bush is saying he will veto any bill that has any
kind of timeline or deadline for withdrawal of troops from Iraq, even if the
timeline/deadline is non-enforceable.

On March 23, 2007 the U.S. House of Representatives passed their version of the
Supplemental Appropriations bill, called the “U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health, and
Iraq Accountability Act.” The bill provides the President with $124.3 billion for a number
of issues, including the funding President Bush requested to continue the war in Iraq.

Claim: Date Certain for U.S. Withdrawal from Iraq: combat troops out of Iraq by August, 2008 at the latest

Reality: With three U.S troops dying each day the war continues, August, 2008 is not an acceptable
deadline for withdrawal of US troops. It is not bringing our troops home now. Furthermore, the bill
allows U.S. troops to remain in Iraq after the August, 2008 withdrawal date if they are “engaging
in targeted special actions limited in duration and scope to killing or capturing members of al-Qaeda
and other terrorist organizations with global reach” are undefined in the bill];
and/or if they are “training members of the Iraqi Security Forces”.
This provision could be used to keep tens of thousands of U.S. troops in Iraq for years to come.

12. another link 191 killed...swimming pool of blood
Bombs kill nearly 200 in Baghdad after PM's pledge

~snip~

The bombs killed a total of 191 people and wounded 250, police said. The worst combined bomb attacks in Baghdad since the war were when six car bombs killed 202 people in November.

"The street was transformed into a swimming pool of blood," said Ahmed Hameed, a shopkeeper near the carnage in Sadriya.

One witness described scenes of mayhem at an intersection where the bomb exploded near a market. Many of the dead were women and children, said the witness, who declined to be named.

"Some people were burned alive inside minibuses. Nobody could reach them after the explosion," said the witness. "Women were screaming and shouting for their loved ones who died."

19. BBC: Up to 200 killed in Baghdad bombs
"Nearly 200 people have been killed in a string of attacks in Iraq's capital, Baghdad - the worst day of violence since a US security operation began.
In one of the deadliest attacks of the last four years, some 140 people were killed in a car bombing in a food market in Sadriya district.

A witness said the area had been turned into "a swimming pool of blood".

The attacks came as PM Nouri Maliki said Iraqi forces would take control of security across Iraq by the year's end."
