While pilots take pay cuts and concessions, American Airlines give bonuses to execs

By the way, didn't the TAXPAYERS bail them out during 911? Where is OUR money?

An estimated 500 American Airlines pilots gathered at their union’s headquarters Wednesday in Fort Worth to march in frustration over the company’s executive bonuses, even while pilots faced reduced pay and concessions during the past few years.

Earlier Wednesday, American parent AMR Corp. said it earned $81 million in the first three months of 2007, the first time it has made money in the first quarter in seven years.

AMR earned 30 cents per share on revenue of $5.43 billion. A year ago, AMR lost $92 million, or 49 cents a share, on revenue of $5.34 billion.

American's pilots expressed frustration over the fact that their bosses – 874 executives and certain key employees – stand to collect more than $160 million in stock.

1. Well, American Airlines exists first and foremost to enrich shareholder value.

Enriching shareholder value is the prime objective of any for-profit corporation. Often, that conflicts with the interests of workers. In fact, providing customer service and watching out for workers is subordinate to the bottom line. This is why so many Americans get shafted on health care and why average wages have stagnated.

If you're not profitable, you get no service. This is pay-to-play land.
