Student Who Sued Teacher For Saying Bible Was BS (and won) Getting Slammed With Court Costs
Student who sued teacher ordered to pay more money
Defense team for James Corbett awarded $12,631 so far.
By SCOTT MARTINDALE
THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

SANTA ANA – A federal court clerk on Tuesday awarded $8,483 in court-related fees to attorneys for high school teacher James Corbett, more than tripling the amount of money that the student who sued over Corbett's anti-Christian rhetoric has been ordered to pay.

Milli Borgarding, the deputy in charge of the Santa Ana division of the U.S. District Court clerk's office, determined that although Corbett violated the First Amendment rights of former student Chad Farnan, Corbett's legal team is entitled to recover a total of $12,631 in court costs.

1. I have been a teacher for 35+ years. It would no more be proper for me ...
to tell my students that the Bible is BS than it would be for me to tell them that the Bible is the word of God. You know damned well that the kid was put up to this by an adult, but the teacher is an idiot.

4. No he isn't. The Christian group that helped him sue is paying the fees.

"The fees are to be paid by Murrietta-based Advocates for Faith & Freedom, the Christian legal group that represented Farnan on a pro bono basis."

10. In the Teacher's Defense, the Bible IS Total BS.
Still not sure how the teacher lost that case. Some seriously incompetent lawyers. I would have walked into that courtroom with the King James, opened it up to the first page, told the kid to read up to the part with the talking snake, yoinked the book away and said, "Your honor, I rest my case."

No legal training whatsoever, and I still could have collected $12K in court costs for 10 minutes work. Sign me up.

11. The teacher said that Creationism was a myth, which it is.
The court decided that Creationism is a religious belief, NOT A SCIENTIFIC FACT/THEORY, and that because it isn't a scientific fact, it is protected as a belief under the First Amendment.

Science actually won this one as creationism was once again shot down as being religious tomfoolery, just as it was in Dover.

The only thing the teacher did "wrong" was to assume that the discussion of creationism was being held on a scientific level, rather than on a religious (ie: make believe, fantasy) level.
