I don't know whether they studied al-chemy or whether they watch Al Jazeera, and I know that they will deny being members of al-Qaeda, but for some reason many freepers regularly drink al-cohol.

Wikipedia is wrong.

I well believe that the first written record of drinking and brewing beer is from Iraq, but I remember reading about an archaeological dig in from a site in Spain about 8500 years old. There was some broken pottery, with residue.

They did chemical analysis of the residue, and determined that it had been beer. They even tried to recreate the recipe, and brewed a batch.

That's my kind of archeology.
