I, (state your name)...
When commenting on the Hassan case, aknowledge that

1) This was a terrible tragedy

2) Hassan is a bad, bad dude. Violence is also bad.

3) Any attempts made to explain or analyze his behavior should not be construed at an excuse for the behavior.

4) Any ommission of the word "terrorism" in said analysis or explanation does not make me a terrorist sympathizer.

5) I no longer feel the need to qualify my comments with 1-4. This hereafter goes without saying.

6) Any DU-ers attempting to accuse me of being an apologist or minimizing the terribleness of the tragedy, the badness of Hassan and/or violence in general, will be referred to this thread, so I don't have to explain this elementary crap over and over again.

Signed,

(state your name)

7. Thank you.
I'm sick of being attacked for being unsympathetic to victims just because I try to understand what drove someone to this kind of heinous crime. I wish this post could be a sticky atop GD every time we have a violent, senseless act like Ft. Hood perpetrated. I'm really sick of explaining myself over and over and over again to people who can't (or don't) read for content when their emotions (or bigotry) are running away with them.

9. Look,
I am sick of reading "explanations" for why a murderer is a murderer.

Okay? Got it?

14. So noted.
This place sometimes makes me very uncomfortable, and those who are too blind with political correctness to see the truth is especially irritating.

13. It's fine to say that
but when we refuse to examine the ills of society, we render ourselves unable to address the causes in any meaningful way.

Racist blanket statements are the place to be! Who cares why they did it! Let's just label everyone in an ethnic group terrists! Then when that leads to its inevitable conclusion and someone points out we're committing genocide we can kill ourselves! YEW ESS AY!

Or you know, we could try to figure out the root cause, address the cause, and reduce the chance of it happening again. Fat chance of that, though. Apparently it's considered disrespectful to the victims of a tragedy to try to prevent another tragedy.

I'm kinda reminded of a line from The Thief of Time(Terry Pratchett). "Remember the Atrocity Committed Against Us Last Time That Will Excuse the Atrocity We're About to Commit Today! And so on! Hurrah!"

24. Figuring out the "root cause"
Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 10:19 PM by TicketyBoo
isn't going to help a whit, for the same reason nothing was done about it this time.

The Army was too afraid of being accused of religious persecution to kick out this Major. So examine his motivation all you want.

If it looks like an Islamic terrorist and it walks like an Islamic terrorist and it quacks like an Islamic terrorist, well…there's nothing the military can do about that because that would be religious persecution. So line up, soldiers, and take one for political correctness gone crazy.

25. "The Army was too afraid of being accused of religious persecution to kick out this Major. "
Wrong.

He wanted to be let out, he repeatedly requested, then pleaded, not to go. He offered to pay back his medical education. It wouldn't have been religious persecution if they had let him go with a dishonorable discharge. The problem wasn't that the Army refused to kick him out, the problem was they refused to let him out.

but we may learn more as time goes on.

From what his colleagues at Walter Reed reported, I believe they were afraid of being accused of persecuting him for his religious beliefs if they insisted on his dismissal. That's the way it reads to me. They tried to decide whether he was dangerous or "just weird."

If all he wanted was "out," he didn't have to kill 13 people. He could have robbed a bank or shot himself in the foot or gotten out in dozens of different ways. He wanted to take out as many American soldiers -- his own soldiers -- as he could.

27. Afraid of religious persecution?
"The Army was too afraid of being accused of religious persecution to kick out this Major."
Which is why we regularly hear stories of Jewish, Muslim, and non-religious soldiers catching ridiculous amounts of hell. Because the Army is afraid of being accused of religious persecution.

Especially if we can learn from it and maybe prevent another one.
