Chris Matthews thick skull and BS
Source: MSNBC TV

Chris Matthews says taxpayers don't want to subsidize abortions

No link yet.

He keeps pushing Stupak's amendment. letting his religion fog his brain. So he thinks taxpayers shouldn't subsidize things they don't believe in. Why is it so hard to understand that millions of taxpayers, including myself, don't believe in using taxpayers dollars to fund wars and the death penalty? What's the diff?

5. with all due respect, this is a stupid analogy
(disclaimer: i am pro-choice)

pregnancy is not a disease, or a malfunction of the human body.

ED *is*

your comparison is greatly dismissive to the strong difference between things that are diseases or disorders and pregnancies- which (generally speaking) are NOT.

one does not need to equate pregnancy with a disease in order to justify that a woman's choice is what should matter in whether an abortion is done.

you play into the hand of many anti-choicers by implying that you believe that a pregnancy is comparable to a disease, and abortion is just eliminating a disease, a pathogen, a disorder, etc.

6. Who said pregnancy was a disease????
Healthcare does not equal ONLY taking care of "disease."

Abortions are part of *health care*!!!!!

Old man Smith and his limp Johnson might not be a disease either - it's nature. Does that mean he should NOT get boner pills? I'm not sure, but it's OFTE not a disease his richard won't work.

I do know that women, and their women parts, don't matter to Republican men or to anti-choice people.

10. Exactly.
That poster is acting as if health care professionals ONLY treat diseases and disorders. In reality, health care involves more than just diseases and disorders. There are emergencies that happen due to accidents, such as broken bones and severe cuts and bruises that require stitches.

12. broken bones are DISORDERs, try reading a dictionary
christ, the ignorance is simply amazing

here's the FIRST definition you get when you type "define: disorder" into google (eliminate the quotes)

a physical condition in which there is a disturbance of normal functioning; "the doctor prescribed some medicine for the disorder";

hth

7. Is a broken arm a disease or disorder?
No, but most people do need a health care professional to set the broken bone.

here is the very FIRST definition you get when you type define:disorder into google...

"a physical condition in which there is a disturbance of normal functioning; "the doctor prescribed some medicine for the disorder";"

a broken arm is "a physical condition in which there is a disturbance of normal functioning"

it's actually an EXCELLENT example of a disorder. thank you for helping me make my point

13. If you've ever been pregnant, it IS a disturbance of normal
functioning. I've been there 4 times..my back, my feet hurt, I had heartburn from a sip of water, things just aren't normal throughout the body, and that doesn't count the times something goes a little more wrong or a big wrong.

15. but it is not a disorder
Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 06:33 PM by paulsby
because it is biologically programmed as a CHANGE in physical structure to support a goal (development of the fetus).

find me one doctor that will define pregnancy as a DISORDER.

i'll stand by that.

normal functioning is changed for all sorts of biological reasons that do not = a disorder.

for example, resistance training causes a disturbance of normal function, but it is an adaptation to be better able to handle similar stressors in the future (see the S.A.I.D.) principle. hypertrophy, hyperplasia, increased capillarization, increased mitochondrization, better rate coding, increased neuromuscular efficieny, increased ATP stores, etc etc.

those are positive adaptation, even though they are not "normal". it's not NORMAL to be able to deadlift 800 lbs. but it is not a DISORDER

otoh, if you tear a muscle, that's a DISORDER. it is not an adaptation to imposed demands that makes it better able to respond to the stressor

the disturbance of normal functions during pregnancy are adaptations to imheposed demands, such that the pregnancy can continue on. that's not a disorder

a fundamental concept of biology is that the purpose of life is to ... wait for it.. propagate itself

18. correct
and many of them can be unpleasant or even deadly.

in the cases where pregnancy results in complications that are significantly injurious/hazardous, etc. then i would say that that PARTICULAR pregnancy was a disorder. most side effects of pregnancy are unpleasant at worse, but not dangerous.

19. i can't comment on the side effects
since i've never been pregnant. i'll defer to the woman who have.
some pregnancies are disorders...one of many reasons why politicians need to butt out of reproductive care...period,

20. but that goes back to the original point
pregnancy itself is not a disorder. it can cause disorders, or become a disorder, but so can weight training

the bill allows for payments for pregnancies that ARE disorders, but not for ELECTIVE abortion.

while i disagree with that, it is a distinction that is made.

and back to the original point, ED is always a disorder. and shouldn't be anologized to pregnancy, which is not

4. You may not want to agree with him, but there ARE a lot of taxpayers
who don't want to pay for abortions. They also don't want to pay for war either.

The diff is there isn't a large enough group in Congress to fight against war,

23. I Can't Believe...
there are actually people in the USA (or anywhere else) who do not realize that pregnancy can be life threatening. It can be life threatening to the embryo/fetus and it can be life threatening to the woman. Those who think it is perfectly all right to let a woman die because after all, she was pregnant and that doesn't count, are ....they are....they are....words fail me.

Who the HELL do those people think they are that they can decide whether a woman lives or dies because of a pregnancy. They can pretend it's not about the devaluing of women, but it is.
