Open Season on anyone perceived to be an Arab or Muslim.....
from thinkprogress:

Marine reservist chases, assaults Greek Orthodox priest who he mistook for an Arab terrorist.

Alexios Marakis, a Greek Orthodox priest visiting the U.S., got lost in Tampa and tried to stop and ask directions from Marine reservist Jasen D. Bruce. But instead of offering help, “Bruce struck the priest on the head with a tire iron.” The reservist believed Marakis, who spoke limited English, was an Arab terrorist. Bruce chased the priest for three blocks, “and even called 911 to say that an Arabic man tried to rob him.” According to a news release:

“During the chase, the suspect called 911 and claimed an Arabic male attempted to rob him and he was going to take him into custody,” a Tampa Police Department news release states. “When officers arrived, the suspect claimed the man was a terrorist.”

Police arrested Bruce for “aggravated battery with a deadly weapon” and are investigating whether he committed a hate crime.

1. I think that it's fairly obvious he *did* commit a hate crime.

The reservist targeted him because the guy was a "terrorist" which he surmised simply by how the man was dressed.

3. one incident justifies the term "open season?"
Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 07:50 PM by paulsby
that's fascinating

by that "logic", it's open season on US servicemembers by muslim fanatics.

after all, some wacko in texas just killed a bunch of them.

therefore, it's clearly "open season"

5. it's the same absurd logic
just showing you , by example, how absurd that article is

one incident does not define a trend, let alone an "open season"
it's hysterical fear mongering, which is just as absurd from the left, as it is from the right

11. I'm sure you would feel different if you were of Arab descent.
You can get attacked and even killed here for the way you speak, look, etc. They are living a nightmare here right now. I have seen on numerous occasions where Sikhs were attacked for wearing turbans. They are neither Muslim nor from the middle east or the Central Asia areas in question. Ignore reality if it makes you feel better. It's how people lose basic human empathy.

6. The ignorance and pliability of the masses is scary...VERY scary.
I know a man who is a Sikh..as peaceful and kind as you can imagine. He was assaulted because he was construed to be Islam...for no other reason. He was totally confused..and could not understand why people were so cruel.

9. What does that have to do with it?
The guy was a Sikh mistaken for a Muslim. And you have no idea whether he was from America originally. There are many American-born Sikhs.

17. It was a comment on human nature
Sorry to be so cryptic. In 1984, after Indira Ghandi was assassinaed by her Sikh body guards,India erupted into anti-Sikh violence. Thousands died. It seemed a little odd that a Sikh (or anyone, for that matter) living in this country should be so unwary as to be surprised by random hostility. I was friends with a Sikh once long ago. He was a charming guy. He was a great cocksman and regarded himself as a warrior.
