Chimp attack victim reveals face on Oprah
A Connecticut woman who was attacked by a 200-pound chimpanzee revealed her heavily disfigured face on television Wednesday, saying she is blind and has to eat through a straw, but isn’t angry.

“I don’t even think about it,” Charla Nash said on Wednesday’s episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” “And there’s no time for that anyways because I need to heal, you know, not look backwards.”

Winfrey removed Nash’s hat and veil to reveal her face, which was swollen and damaged beyond recognition. She had a large scar near the bottom of her face and a large piece of skin where her nose had been.

The Feb. 16 attack occurred when the animal’s owner, Sandra Herold, asked Nash, her friend and employee, to help lure the animal back into her house in Stamford, Conn. The chimpanzee ripped off Nash’s hands, nose, lips and eyelids.

I really feel sorry for her. How awful. I guess the only good news is she apparently brain-damaged as was once feared.

2. So Sad
It makes one feel so helpless knowing there is so little we can do to help her. I marvel at her strength and lack of bitterness. How could one not be angry as well as depressed?

3. I don't mean this to sound mean....but I'm surprised they weren't able to "fix" it more.
Like her face is barely recognizable as a face. Did anyone watch this and has she said if the doctors are still working on her or if she was going to continue seeing plastic surgery specialists or anything?

I feel horribly sorry for this woman and this chimp attack. I'm just hoping the doctors out there can do more to help her more to restructure some of this.

4. From what I've heard, this is a work in progress.
Sorry if that sounds ugly, but as I understand it they're doing a fix and heal, fix and heal, fix and heal sort of thing. I may be wrong, but again, that's the last I heard of it.

I feel for her as well, and hope her doctors will work some miracles.

10. If there's too much scar tissue I think there's a point where they can't do much more
I saw a dude who was mauled by a bear, and he looked even worse. :(

5. Oprah is so damn wrong to air this! It's exploitation to the nth degree.

7. I read that the victim is blind and can't see her face.
Do you think she would want people to see her if she knew the truth?

8. i'm sure she has been told what she looks like
she might not know exactly but she probably knows it's something very different from what she use to look like.

why does it matter anyways ? to show her face ? she will be going out in public and people will see her.

9. How different is what Oprah is doing from tabloids like the Globe that Oprah can't stand?
It's sensational and exploitative and Oprah WILL make money off the show.

11. you think she should be ashamed of the way she looks
and not show herself in public ?

you don't think she is going to go out in public ? maybe she wants her story told so people are aware and it would be easier on her.

12. Put yourself in that ladies shoes and think about how YOU will feel about people making money
off your misery.

Maybe it's about public awareness but I still think it's too soon and exploitative.

14. Oprah already has a lot of money, if i was in her position i might want to do the Oprah show
also just to let people see why i look like i do. and just talk about what happened.

i just can't see it being exploitative. if there was an issue concerning her mental abilities i might view it differently. but there isnt.

15. on the show
i believe she said that she wanted to reveal herself on HER terms, and she did just that. all the paps that wanted the "first" picture are SOL now.

this was her decision.

17. disagree
disagree, it shows chimps for what they are, not the cute innocents people think they are. they can be quite savage indeed. their strength and the ways they attack are brutal, they go for the hands to disarm, biting off all your fingers. they destroy your face, then if a male, they rip off your testicles.

quite different from the nature of peace and love that some like to portray

13. And this is what plastic surgery is for
and I am sure many surgeries to come... and some already under her belt.

Good luck... and I hope they can reconstruct as much as possible so you can live a more or less normal life (all things considered). I mean most people will stare, point and do other things that force people who have had these horrific injuries and at times fear them.

IN spirit my support to you... that is a long road to go.
