Edited on Fri Nov-13-09 12:32 AM by maxpower
I breath good air, have a roof over my head, a beautiful healthy daughter, two great dogs, can eat good food (I am by no means wealthy), my daughter gets a decent education (her mother and I are involved), playgrounds, bike paths etc. I think you get the picture.
Then I ask myself, why isn't every human being entitled to the same thing? This world is so very unfair. We need to figure out how to get money out defense (and their robber baron cohorts). I weep for those that live in abject poverty with no hope whatsoever. That is all. I hope I didn't bum you out.

Peace,
Max

Edited because I hit post to quick. Sorry

2. true, but i dont want bike paths, but also need lots of space to roam, hunt etc
i guess every human wants different things, not sure that everyone would agree on what everyone should get beyond the basics of food, water, shelter etc..

6. yeah but at what level, it sounds good to say we should all have a bare minimum
but what happens if that level is way below what you have now, would you be happy....

11. I don't think he's saying that we all should be lowered to a bare minimum.
He's saying that those below that bare minimum should be raised up. Possibly at some sacrifice to the most wealthy, but not by lowering everyone to the same level.

12. yeah i understood what he was saying, but the majority of the human race live well below him
Edited on Fri Nov-13-09 01:08 AM by vadawg
so in order to average it out then the chances are just about everyone in the US would have to have their standard lowered, no more modern conveniences everywhere, less power etc etc...

it sounds like a great idea but in practice you will always have people who have more and people who have less...

it would go a long way.

16. yeah but dont you think you would still have to give up at least your computer
in order for someone in a remote corner of the planet to get clean water, now you have to give up your TV, Stereo etc so they can get plumbing, not that im getting at you, but its just pie in the sky to think that people will ever sacrifice their standard of living to profit complete strangers, it sounds good but if people really felt that way they would be selling all their stuff and giving away the money..

22. I'm not so sure.
I'm not saying that it wouldn't take some political willpower, and I won't say that we'll actually be able to achieve it (because of political roadblocks), but it should be possible to meet the basic needs of everyone and eventually move everyone who wants it to something resembling our high-tech lifestyle. High-tech is in fact the key. An example of what could be done is the high rise farming discussed in the current issue of Scientific American.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=the-rise-of-vertical-farms

Unfortunately the entire article isn't available online but I have the current issue and it's a very interesting idea. We could turn a large proportion, possibly most, of our existing farmland back into natural grassland or forest, and grow nearly all of our food near where it's consumed using renewables and recyclables.

27. entitled? no, that's really not how nature works. it would be nice
I'd love to see it, but human nature is fairly brutish. It's more than that of course, but that's a significant component.

10. But this is what this country was founded on
If one had to give up a little so others could have a little more......you would not notice it so much because the gap would be so much less. The gap is huge now and people see the gap and ask where is mine. Less gap less worry.

Years ago people had less, but more time, and they thought they were rich because they felt it in their hearts and souls. Whole neighborhoods felt rich.

23. That's why FDR proposed the New Deal.
Security. He looked at his life, and wondered why his class was the only one that was truly secure. God bless him. I hope that everyone has a moment like yours.

30. Nope. Certain people are entitled to their own ocean vessel
where they can spend obscene amounts of money sailing around the world. While others can drink waste water. Both solely on where they were born.

32. my life is pretty easy too. simple. enjoyable for all of us. brother two decades choses chaos
every single time. every time he has things in plae to create that as he states it is his intent and goal, he fucks it up. to be sure, cannot go a year without creating a drama to live in misery

we are all uniquely different as people and we each chose how we wnat to create our life. nature and nurture being a part of our choices. all people do not want your life. all people do not want my life.

we could give every person a million dollars. 6 months you will have those that are broke, those that have the million and those that now have 2 million.

i hear what you say. we need the nets for the people that need them. i agree. but to decide that all need to live in a comfortable life like we have chosen just isnt gonna happen
