No Pumpkin Pie for You!
Edited on Sat Nov-21-09 10:47 AM by ddeclue

Libby's which makes and sells most of the pumpkin pie filling in the U.S.A. says they had a poor harvest this year and that there will be shortage of pumpkin pie filling this Thanksgiving.

I guess that gives new meaning to "too big to fail"..

1. We bought ours last week along with the other non-perishables we need for Thanksgiving.
Glad we did. :)

3. I hate Pumpkin Pie.. I am making my traditional Apple Pie.. with macintosh apples
from up north. My mom couldn't believe I'd waste those good apples on a pie.. I told her it was Grandma's secret, Duh.. she who swore off pies for a generation in our family line.

4. We always buy the store brand
since Libby's is a Nestle product, and I've been boycotting Nestle's all my adult life. My SIL did give me a can of Libby's once, but the store brand is better anyway.

Butternut squash makes a great pie that is similar to pumpkin, although it does have some actual texture, unlike canned pumpkin.

6. store brands are done by packer....it's possible that
the store brand you purchase is packed for them by Libby's aka Nestle

7. I am stocked up.. there were tons of cans at our Fareway
But my husband read that also, about the Pumpkin shortage. There is this little tiny greedy grinch in me, that wants to go buy more, but I will listen to my better angels and leave some for others. :)

8. Wednesday is Pumpkin Pie Day!
Big day for me since I was a small girl when mom made pies the day before Thanksgiving. She always made me a little tart pie because I couldn't wait until the next day. That's a good memory.

Anyway -

Now we call it Poo-Poo Pie Day.

I was pouring the filling in the pies when my son was two (he's 20 now). He looked at it and loudly exclaimed: "Poo-Poo Pie!"

I couldn't stop laughing. It's been Poo-Poo Pie since!

That's another good memory.
:)

9. They're selling leftover stock from last year. The REAL shortage will be next year.
Libby's is owned by the evil Nestle company. I think they're using the very real problem of this year's crop to dump their surplus stock. The current crop hasn't made it onto the shelves in most places.
