Police remove deer after it wanders into downtown Toronto

TORONTO - Toronto police had to use a Taser this morning to subdue a deer that had wandered into the downtown core.

The deer, estimated to be about 90 kilograms and two to three years old, had rested amid small bushes beside a building for about four hours. Officers used a tranquilizer gun to subdue the animal, but Const. Tony Vella says that didn't work, so they used a Taser.

The deer was then hauled into the back of an animal control van and taken away to be checked by a veterinarian.

Police could not say where the deer had come from, but it had earlier been spotted several blocks south, near Union Station.

The animal had nestled among some small bushes near University Ave. and Dundas St. W. and a Greyhound bus station.

"We first tried to tranquilize the animal (but) unfortunately, that was not successful, then we went to the second option of Tasering," said Vella.

"I'm happy to say the animal is fine, it's under control and it will be alive - that's not an issue. The main thing is no one was hurt."

1. Torturing animals like this is sad.
But of course you don't expect anything different from a cop.

3. I disagree with your viewpoint
The animal was or would be in danger if it ran into traffic in the city. It could have hurt someone and then the police would have probably shot it dead. They did their best to save the animal and people. I am the first one to condemn people for hurting animals.

I just read this week where a man jumped into a bear den at a zoo in Germany to have a picnic with the bear. The first thing the police did was shoot it with fragmenting bullets. To me that was very stupid. They shot it four times I believe and the vets at the zoo could not operate on it because of all the bullet fragments. THAT MADE ME VERY SAD. I would have shot the man.

9. This deer caused gridlock for hours in the busiest time of day, vets thought that tranquilizing
would work but the deer would remain active for long enough to cause major problems, I am glad they chose this route no harm done.

2. Don't they have wildlife experts who know what to do in these cases?
And they deal with creatures much more dangerous than a single deer. Just saying... :-(

5. the 'experts' would have suggested tranq darts
They tried and failed. Alternatives were to tase, shoot, or let bambi go along on its own, surely resulting in an encounter with a vehicle before too long.

It's not like they could have Snow White come and sing the deer to safety.

8. I'm always on the lookout for deer around here.
It's not unusual to see them while I'm driving and I've seen them in the cemetery where my Dad is. But they're usually on their way from one wooded area to another. I generally slow down or stop to make sure that they make it.

10. Sadly, most other drivers are not
especially in a city.

11. Anyone with any sense gives a deer right-of-way.
I have this gadget on my car that's supposed to make a sound that warns deer. I don't know if it works, but then I make it a point to stay out of their way... But I do enjoy watching them. :-)

12. Bet more drivers are on cell calls or texting than even considering wildlife might be on their route
They can't seem to avoid other drivers, let alone wildlife

I love the critters too. Lucky me, I do not live in a big city, but a place in the middle of perfect habitat.

14. I agree with you.
I see people driving while talking on phones, let alone while they're walking, shopping, etc. I often do a double take because they appear to be talking to themselves. x(

I live outside of a small city, lots of woods, so am always on the lookout, not just for wildlife, but dogs, cats, and small kids chasing balls. :scared:

Sounds like where you live is lovely. It's also close to ideal here. We once had a deer grazing not far from the backyard, so stood there watching. :-)

It seems some here think that is an alternative. I knew with the words Tazer and Bambi in the subject line would make this a popular thread.
