WASHINGTON (AFP) – Osama bin Laden was "within the grasp" of US forces in late 2001 but escaped because then-defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld rejected calls for reinforcements, a hard-hitting US Senate report says.

The report, set for release Monday, is intended to help learn the lessons of the past as President Barack Obama prepares to announce a major escalation of the conflict, now in its ninth year, with up to 35,000 more US troops.

4. He was right but for all the wrong reasons...
If they caught Bin Laden it would have shortened at least the Afghanistan war and most likely we'd never have invaded Iraq. That's not good for the defense industries and our Saudi "friends". Couldn't let that happen can we?

7. No, he wasn't. Here are a few of his failings.
1. Thought 30,000 troops would be enough to take over Iraq.
2. Told troops that the company that makes up-armored Humvees
was working "as fast as they can". The next day the company stated
they could increase production 20% if the military would
just ask.
3. Was most likely responsible for firing the Iraqi police force and
military and "de-Baathification" strategy that backfired.
4. Decided that looting going on at Iraqi museums was not worth pursuing.
"Vases? How many vases do we need?"
5. Decided that protecting the huge cache of explosives found still with
IAEA seals was not worth guarding, and which later went missing.
