Was he being sarcastic?

I can remember reading this the other day: http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/taxes/2009-11-25-oecd25_ST_N.htm

By David J. Lynch, USA TODAY
You'd never know it from all the cable news chatter, but Americans bear the lightest tax burden in the developed world.

Total U.S. tax revenues in 2008 equaled 26.9% of gross domestic product, according to provisional figures released Tuesday by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. That figure – which includes local, state and federal taxes, including Social Security – was lower than the 1990 ratio and far below levels across Europe. In Denmark, the total tax take exceeds 48% of the economy. In France, it tops 43%; Germany, 36%.

To those on the right, who see Uncle Sam's comparatively light touch as a key to economic growth, the new numbers show what's at stake as the Obama White House battles the recession with generous doses of public funds. To others, the tax data from the 30-nation organization suggest the U.S. has room to raise taxes to pay for its unprecedented crisis-related borrowing.

"We're not an overtaxed country," says economist Dean Baker of the left-of-center Center for Economic and Policy Research.

1. We pay the highest costs for prescription drugs, that's for sure
Probably to help subsidize the costs worldwide, which is why we can't import "dangerous" Canadian drugs... meanwhile, China recalls anti-cancer drugs, depakote, and so on due to a dangerous mistake made...

2. Workers are taxed higher and get less for it than workers elsewhere
Owners get a free ride if they're among the pampered plutocracy.

Why do you think so many foreign drug manufacturers are headquartered in the US? Our taxes are that much cheaper.

5. No, you are not taxed higher than workers elsewhere.
That's absolute nonsense.

9. We are in relation to what we get
We get a cut to the bone public service area, decent roads and a bloated military.

3. If that's what he said, Rooney is wrong.
And Mr. Lynch is correct.

6. I hear Republican Reps and Senators say that all the time
It's a lie but they say it. They especially like to say we have the highest taxes on business.

7. Andy Rooney is a source for curmudgeonly commentary.
Not for news or actual facts.

8. Another disconnect:
On the one hand they argue that they don't want to pay high taxes like in Europe then argue that we have the highest taxes in the world.

10. If one were to figure in all the various taxes we pay in the US, does anyone know what the rate is?
I'm talking about a total of all sales and local, state and all federal taxes, everything. Including all those odd taxes we always see added on our utilities and even the ones we don't see added on our fuel, tobacco and alcohol purchases. Is there someplace where I could find this information broken down by state?

Truth be told, I imagine most of us don't have a clue how much of our income goes toward the various taxes we pay. I know I don't.

13. His whole monologue last night was dripping with sarcasm.
At first when I was listening, I thought, what happened to Andy and as he continued I realized he was being sarcastic. He needs to borrow our emoticon to put up on the screen while he's doing it.

14. I thought it might be sarcasm, but that can be easy to miss.
You can bet if I missed it, then there were the freeper types who were shouting "right-on" at their tv.

15. Rooney is bullshit. Doesn't include what German/France includes.
In Europe, costs of major items:
retirement
health care
...and...
disability
sick days
extended vacation days
holidays
...and...
union dues
...and more...

are all included.

NOT INCLUDED WITH OUR TAXES.

ADD those on top of our taxes, THEN calculate the percentage of GDP. And, don't forget to add in that EVERYBODY GETS IT. Don't try to disclude poor Americans who don't get a retirement, or HC, or nothing more as zero to add. They get that over there so add it in in order to compare the numbers.

I think you'll find that we pay more than they do and we get less for that more money.

You've been a right-wing sellout shit for years Rooney. I just no longer care if it's dumbness or contrivance that drives you.
