Vancouver SunEmployees at Hertz Rental Cars unanimously voted in favour of strike action on Tuesday, adding to a growing list of possible private-sector strikes that could delay travelers at Vancouver International Airport during the holiday season and Olympics.
Pickets from Hertz employees could be up as early as mid-January if mediation fails, said Andy Ross, president of the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union Local 378.
... This is the third announcement in the past week of possible strike action that could affect airport travelers during the holidays and Olympics.
... A standard rental car for a week at Hertz during the Olympic period will cost upwards of 500 per cent more as compared to the same rental dates in January.
Ross said the average starting wage for a Hertz employee is $12.65 and the company is offering no wage increases in 2010 and wants to replace full-time positions with part-time workers.
