Catholic Church buries limbo after centuries

By Philip Pullella

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Roman Catholic Church has effectively buried the concept of limbo, the place where centuries of tradition and teaching held that babies who die without baptism went.

In a long-awaited document, the Church's International Theological Commission said limbo reflected an "unduly restrictive view of salvation," according to the U.S.-based Catholic News Service, which obtained a copy on Friday.

The thumbs-down verdict on limbo had been expected for years and the document, called "The Hope of Salvation for Infants Who Die Without Being Baptised," was seen as most likely to be final since limbo was never formally part of Church doctrine.

Pope Benedict authorized the publication of the document.

According to the CNS report, the 41-page document says the theologians advising the Pope concluded that since God is merciful he "wants all human beings to be saved."

6. Same here!
As it is, if the Pope's God is all-powerful, then he can
save anybody he wants to. I'm not going to spend time
stressing out on the subject.

4. okay so everything I was taught since I was old enough to
understand is subject to revision, is that it? x(

Hell, I've always known that limbo is here on earth, if there is a heaven and a hell, we are stuck in limbo (here on earth) waiting to get our assigned destination.

7. When I went to Catholic school, the nuns told us to pray for the poor unbaptized babies
in limbo.

23. I can't remember now, but
were the "poor unbaptized babies" the same as the "pagan babies"? I'm familiar with both terms from back in the day, but for some reason I used to think that unbaptized babies were dead, but pagan babies were "heathens who didn't know Jesus yet" (I remember being told to give money to the cause of pagan babies).

My poor middle-aged head hurts just trying to recollect it all.

25. I think the pagan babies were non-Catholic babies living in poverty
that they wanted to convert. I remember the missionaries visiting our school to ask for money for their missions, and the pagan babies were always mentioned.

One of my most vivid memories of Catholic school was when my best friend accidentally pulled off a nun's veil. Imagine your hair 10 times worse than it has ever looked when you first crawled out of bed.

28. Nope, nothing has ever looked worse
than my hair when I first crawl out of bed in the morning, confused and blinking like some nocturnal animal suddenly exposed to sunlight. Not until I found a hairdresser who truly understands me, anyway.

It's all man-made.

29. ALL religious dogma
....is man made.

Some of the "makers" claim divine inspiration.

Many doubt that inspiration.

10. So does taht mean that ad hoc baptisms are now off the table?
as a Medic I had to do that one once to a featus born four months too early and dead.

I did it for the sake of the family...

11. OK let me get this straight
Babies who died without being baptized went to limbo for the last 2000 years, but from now on they won't go there anymore? What about all those who are already there - will they go directly to heaven? Or did limbo never really exist at all and the whole thing was just bullshit that they used to keep the peasants in line? And if they were bullshitting us all this time about limbo how can we really believe them when they tell us about heaven and hell? And if limbo was never formally part of church doctrine what twisted mind dreamed it up?

On the other hand it must be pretty easy for those little babies to go under that bar.
