Dutch coffee shops say cannabis smoke here to stay

Thu Apr 19, 2007 11:42AM EDT

By Sabine Fiedler

AMSTERDAM (Reuters Life!) - Could a smoking ban spell the end of Amsterdam's world famous coffee shops, where smoking cannabis is one of the main attractions? No chance, says local conservative politician and coffee shop owner Michael Veling.

The Dutch may well follow other European countries in banning tobacco smoking in restaurants, cafes and bars, but Veling says it should still be possible to smoke dope. "It is ridiculous to think that a smoking ban would be the end of coffee shops", the 50-year-old Veling says.

He says the clientele who have been coming to coffee shops to buy and inhale cannabis are flexible enough to find a way around any ban on smoking the tobacco products they routinely mix with marijuana resin or leaf in rolled paper "joints".

"You can bring parsley or old socks if you want, cut them here and smoke them, nobody will say anything," Veling said....:hippie:

The older I get, the more I'll smoke - that's my plan.

:spray:

That's good, but you should see what happens at the I-69 Meet-up in Indiana. (not really, but we can always dream.)

Those volcanoes (more than 400€ mail order) are expensive appliances. Will they eventually replace smoke and rolling papers?

10. never too old
I was 48 before I could afford to go to Amsterdam and enjoy the coffee shops. I spent 2 days doing noting but research on the differences between the dozens of coffee shops within a few blocks. I found my favorite, (Jolly Joker) and moved in. I highly recommend coffee shop research for mid-life!

28. I had a friend who fell in love with the coffee houses there.
He was a mechanic for an American sponsored cycling team (early 1980's). Whenever there was a break in the racing season, the mechanics would head for Amsterdam. He said his favorite place was the Pink Floyd Coffee House.

11. I Lived In Holland From 1999-2005
I laugh at the Freepers who proclaim how FREE Americans are.

And then listen to them describe Holland as the land of drugs and whores.

They couldn't be more wrong.

17. 24/7 and Never Need To Make A "Connection"
Walk in, walk out. No one pays attention. No whispers behind your back.

And the funny thing is: life is like America in the 40's there. Simple and tranquil.

Americans can really be drama queens.

20. [ Magic ] Mushrooms are legal and available in shops here as well
But unfortunately the majority in Parliament want to put fresh mushrooms on the hard drugs list
Dried mushrooms are already on the list and are forbidden.

I think the only reason for keeping cannabis 'legal' is tourism, so please keep visiting ;)
You're welcome!!

Although I didn't go to the coffee houses or use any cannabis or mushrooms, I did find some very excellent beer. Amsterdam is a wonderful city.

32. Sounds like my trip in January to Germany. Everybody there were...
...drinking Budweiser!

It was the REAL Budweiser from the Czech Republic, but it still seemed weird that the Germans were so into Non-German Beer.

But I guess it was no more weird than when I was in London in 1998 and everyone was drinking Miller "High Life" Beer. That was weird.
