Denmark keeps Christmas away from summit

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- The Danish Foreign Ministry said all symbols of Christmas, including fir trees, should be kept away from the U.N. Climate Change Conference.

The ministry said the conference, known as COP15, should be kept free of symbols presenting Christmas, despite the Dec. 7-18 meeting's proximity to the holiday, The Copenhagen Post reported Friday.

Officials said the ministry rejected a sponsorship providing numerous fir trees for the conference to keep it independent of the religious holiday.

"We have to remember that this is a U.N. conference and, as the center then becomes U.N. territory, there can be no Christmas trees in the decor, because the U.N. wishes to maintain neutrality," said Svend Olling, the Foreign Ministry's head of practical planning for the summit.
