WHat the heck. Really, I have given some thoughtful replies to many posts. Have started a couple myself. Is it my breath??

108. Here's the deal about starting threads.
If you think you have something unique, some late-breaking story. Some opinion that no one else has voiced to your satisfaction. A weird, quirky story. Or just because you feel like starting something.

My advice? Go for it. Post away. Let it fly.

But take heart.

Sometimes, the one post can make it to the Greatest page or even the motherlode... the front page of DU. It's notoriously hard to predict the response.

Some of the BEST posts come from those who have low post counts. Post counts mean nothing.

The trick is not to get discouraged. Posting something new is not guaranteed to make it.

The only way to stay OFF DU's radar is to NOT post something.

But maybe, if you do, it may even make DU history.

14. Here, maybe this will help. I found this when I recovered a bunch of old E-mail from 1999!
Subject: A Good Laugh For A Wednesday... (I laughed so much I started
crying)

HoW To KeEp A hEaLtHy LeVeL Of InSaNiTy AnD dRiVe OtHeR PeOpLe
iNsAnE...

At lunch time, sit in your parked car and point a hair dryer at passing cars to see if they slow down.

Page yourself over the intercom. (Don't disguise your voice)

Find out where your boss shops and buy exactly the same outfits. Always wear them one day after your boss does. (This is especially effective if your boss is the opposite gender.)

Send e-mail to the rest of the company to tell them what you're doing. For example: If anyone needs me, I'll be in the bathroom.

Put mosquito netting around your cubicle.

Insist that your e-mail address be xena_goddess_of_fire@companyname.com <mailto:xena_goddess_of_fire@companyname.com> , Elvis_the_King@companyname.com <mailto:elvis_the_king@companyname.com>

Every time someone asks you to do something, ask if they want fries with that.

Encourage your colleagues to join you in a little synchronized chair dancing.

Put your garbage can on your desk and label it "IN".

Develop an unnatural fear of staplers.

Send e-mail messages that advertise free pizza, doughnuts, etc., in the break room. When people complain that there was nothing there, lean back, rub your stomach, and say, "You've got to be faster than that."

Put decaf in the coffee maker for 3 weeks. Once everyone has gotten over their caffeine addictions, switch to espresso.

In the memo field of all your checks, write "for sexual favors".

Reply to everything someone says with, "That's what you think."

Finish all your sentences with "in accordance with the prophecy."

Adjust the tint on your monitor so that the brightness level lights up the entire working area. Insist to others that you like it that way.

Dont use any punctuation

As often as possible, skip rather than walk.

Ask people what sex they are.

Specify that your drive-through order is "to go".

Sing along at the opera.

Go to a poetry recital and ask why the poems don't rhyme.

Five days in advance, tell your friends you can't attend their party because you're not in the mood.

.....AnD tHe FiNaL WaY tO aNnOy PeOple:

Send this e-mail to everyone in your address book, even if they sent it to you or have asked you not to send them stuff like that.

85. No, it wasn't too hot at all. Thanks for asking.
One of the reasons I laughed so hard was that I was taking a walk the other day, and suddenly I was seized with a mad urge to skip. Of course I didn't, because the concern about what the neighbors would think was just too strong. But it really would have been good exercise. Then I got to thinking about how much of what I do (or don't do)gets done merely to appear socially acceptable. Thanks for the good laugh.

Edited on Sat Apr-21-07 04:59 AM by WePurrsevere

(sorry I just couldn't resist. :hi:)

Seriously though... I've often wondered the same thing and I'm sure many others have as well and it's not just DU either... it seems like the more active a board is the more often it happens. Over the years, on a few overall non-political discussion boards I've often felt like I'm invisible or something. Of course logic dictates that I could be sitting here stinking to high heaven and no one here in cyber space would know... although I suppose there may be one or two that wonder. ;))

Anyway, there are logical reasons why any one poster is not responded to at any point in time, the least likely would be that you have bad breath or need a new deodorant :D If you're mostly posting at what is 4am-ish EST that might be a part of it, OTOH during the day it scrolls by so fast and folks are often more hurried and tend to look for a title that catches their eye I think and in threads it's not always easy to read each reply so again many of us skim for "subject" line that grabs us, etc.

Hopefully all the responses to your thread will help you (and perhaps others who wonder the same thing) feel better. For most people, most of the time it's truly nothing personal... it's unfortunately just the way things go, especially with more active boards IME. :)

(edited for clarity (I hope)... I think I need another cuppa.:hangover:)

Happens all the time. I just put up an OP that I thought was pretty good. Sank like a stone, as usual. One vote and 2 replies. Maybe next time I'll put 'Valerie Plame Nude Photos' in my subject line.

If you're looking for approval, votes mean more than replies. I have made the front page only once but that was pretty cool.

I am here because of my devout political leanings, not cuz I am intelligent.

27. maybe that's good...
or like someone said, perhaps your post summed up all to say on the subject? otoh, often replies miss the point, or deny its aptness (capital punishment is such a type of subject)...Less so, for example; only one angel can dance on the head of a pin, i know it because obviously more then one angel would disrupt the cosmos, but try to assert that on DU!
how many posts are made at DU daily? if you visit once a day, if several pages of posts have been made, a quick scan of latest breaking might mean most are missed...most replies happen quite soon after post time, so it's easy to get lost in the shuffle.

33. Good morning from Michigan!!
Have a great day. And remember that even progressive message boards have a hierarchy. Some of the more "popular" people can talk about dog crap and get 200 responses on how brilliant they are on the subject of dog crap. Others can post an opinion on a political subject and get torched so badly they have to put down their computer so they can "stop, drop and roll" to put out the flames. It is was it is. I don't attempt to post often.....it usually hurts too much to do it on DU. I just linger and respond to other posts now. Live and learn.

35. It happens to most of us.
As pointed out earlier in this thread, a lack of replies do not indicate bad breath. If you post during a feeding frenzy like Imus or Gonzo AND the subject is not Imus or Gonzo, it's not unusual for threads to sink like a stone.

Not all of us can write as well as NanceGreggs.

Keep thinking & keep posting - we need your viewpoints.

39. Ah, don't worry about it - I get that all the time.
And I don't mind, truth be told, because I'm here mostly to read and learn, not to yap - though I often can't resist adding my 2 cents. Whether someone else responds to that or not, is secondary. If you start a thread, it's nice of course if there are replies and kicks and some interest, especially if it's on a topic of great importance to you - but I tend to look at the "views" more so than the replies to see if people are reading. Sometimes I'll give it a gratuitous self-kick, too.

Basically, just keep doing what you're doing, and the people who feel so compelled, will reply or at least read and learn something. I've seen your name in the recent threads, so you're not invisible. Invisible is me. ;)

While others which I did not think were quite as good have gone to the top of the greatest page. I think a lot of it is luck, sometimes people will read what your posts and sometimes they won't. It is frustrating when you put a lot of time in to writing a post and then it sinks, but keep at it and you will have some that do get noticed.

49. I think we all have had that experience.
I have even seen a few of my threads make it to the greatest page, only to disappear soon afterward.

The only thing that bothers me about this, however, is the fact that some of our thoughtful posts are dropped like stones just to make room for many duplicate threads on the sensation of the day or the week. We will see a zillion threads on Imus, Cho, or whatever, but all the rest will disappear. I don't think Imus and Gonzales are not worth discussing. Obviously these topics are. But they are not all that is worth discussing, and that seems to be what happens.

I think of an old George Carlin riff, where he imagines what would happen if everyone in the world went to the same place. Someone would go, "Hey, everyone! Over here!" and then everyone would go there and the earth would tilt.

Each time anything happens, someone yells, "Hey, everyone! Over here!" and then everyone goes there, and nothing else can be seen or heard until that topic issue finally winds down or is replaced by some other topic of the day or week.

Oh, and yes, I have been meaning to discuss your breath with you, but it's just so awkward to bring it up ;).

69. and the irony is those sink into oblivion within half an hour
We need a variant on the DUzy awards. Collect some of the more thoughtful diatribes and put them in a permanent location, where they don't "sink." I guess that's what personal journals are supposed to do but then you have to search by author. The greatest page is also meant for that, but with the level of chatter in this forum, it gets overwhelmed too.

57. DU can sometimes be like a high school clique
I found this site in 2002, lurked and didn't register until 2004, and don't even have 1,000 posts here in 2007. I've been accused of being a freeper for 3 years because of my low post count. Most of my threads only have 5 comments or so. Other well known posters here sometimes take my links and make their own threads, which get hundreds of replies. The thing that matters really is that the information get out. I'm too old to play kiddie games, and I'm not ego driven.

Don't take it personal. I'll make a point of replying to your posts. :)

Which is why a rarely partake in many discussions anymore...who has the time to sort through all of the ridiculous high-drama antics and attacks? And don't dare post anything that might not agree with the sentiment of a handful of DU sacred-cow "celebrities." Frankly, I have better things to do with my time which is why I visit only occasionally, read through the more interesting posts and keep my mouth shut. Unless, of course, I happen upon a thread that I can identify with...such as this one.

58. I think your post will made a lot of people feel better about themselves.
I've found that the more thought I put into an OP, and the longer it takes to put it together, the less likely people are to respond. I've been really bummed out by that before but I learned to expect that now.

As a general rule, if it's responses you want, reactionary posts that take 2 seconds to whip out are the key. Or, start threads that say something ugly about John Edwards. You'll get all kinds of responses, but you might not like them. On the other hand, start an ugly thread about Hillary and you'll have a whole new group of best friends.

59. Two thoughts;
First, yes this also happens to me all the time, my profound, earth shaking missives are barely noticed :-) But this often happens at a time when there is very high traffic here with lots of folks making lots of post. Especially if there is a big, high profile event like the VT killings or the Gonzo hearings. Off topic subjects can get lost.

Second, is a suggestion. There are a lot of great forums here as well as the General Discussion. They aren't view by as many people, but the post seem to stick a lot longer. If your thread is more specific, perhaps leaving it in one of those would lead to the type of feedback you'd like.

BTW, It's ironic, but you seem to have finally found a thread people want to respond to in numbers.

74. Forums are a phenomenon
Don't take it personally.

I've posted things that I know are extremely important. Not a reply.

People have their interests.
Sometimes something is posted in several locations, and we've already seen it.
Sometimes what is posted is so obvious to me, I don't need to post a reply.
Sometimes it's something that doesn't interest people.
Sometimes it's something that people aren't ready for.

Just don't talk about population. It's only the single most important issue. I can't even get the forum to let us have our own discussion area. Go figure. Gore's list of a dozen issues doesn't even address population. So if you think you're frustrated, you aren't alone.

But remember, forums are a social phenomenon. They're dynamic. And most of all, tough skin is required. Humor is probably the most important aspect of all. And I could use a bit of that.

Edited on Sat Apr-21-07 03:01 PM by Madspirit
I'm not kidding about the subject line. It's very very important to put something catchy in the subject line. I learned this years ago. I own some very popular entertainment groups on Yahoo and I usually just put something like..."SEX" in the subject line and everyone reads. You can't really do that here but you can do something equivalent. For instance, I posted a long post about mental illness a couple of days ago. It made it to the Greatest Posts page. I put "Mental Illness and MURDER" in the subject line. If I had put "Caring for the mentally ill" in the subject line, no one would have read it.

I am being serious too. You have to catch people's eye.

90. When the DU was smaller - it was easier to get a response. Now there are
40 threads on the same topic as opposed to 10. Much harder to get a response. Try the lounge. Or try searching the net to find an interesting opinion piece or article. Then start your own discussion. That is the surest way.. Come to the DU loaded with topics that are original. Takes a little bit of work..but worth it. Try the Huffington Post.

98. i had insomnia until i learned to meditate.. it is called Theta Jump, a Phenomenon that happens when
you meditate laying down. When Your brain waves shift to Alpha, around 10.5 cycles pr second during meditation laying down they slow to Alpha then 'Jump' over the Theta Rhythm and into Delta.. the brain waves of sleep. it happens in like... 3 seconds.

you can program when you want to wake up and what you want to dream about.. or acquire insight on a particular subject.. just before you meditate while laying down. the Tibetans have developed quite a technique over the last 1400 years of intensive research on the subject..

114. i will post on the 'DU Groups", Ethnicity, Religion and Atheism Group/ Seekers on Unique Paths
the page doesn't change every 10 minutes there..

Meditation is a method of training the mind. there are levels along the path, but essentially the goal is to learn to view the 'object' and the 'Subject' in non-duality.. or as the same thing.

meditation is compared to learning to play a musical insturment.., your need a teacher, you need to dedicate practice every day and it takes about as long to master. 6 months to a year and a half starting out with only 10 minutes for the first month..

check out http://www.buddhanet.net there is a little video there and instructions.. there are also teachings in the Buddha net Audio section lower left corner box.

i listen to a lot of pema Chodron CD's, jack kornfield, sharon salzberg, Shenzen young.. there isn't a group around here, i use to go to a Galupa group, a Chenrezig Center in El Paso TX. it really helps to have a group that meets weekly and practices, there are 'insight meditation' groups around a lot of places. none here tho

121. many thanks for the prospective post, i'll check it out
i'll also study the link you've provided.

one of my best friends is a practitioner of yoga. We discuss many aspects of it, he is very into the physical aspects of it, i keep reminding him of the mind's function in it. He has limited knowledge of the rich history/text of Buddhism, so i supply what i've studied thru the years.

i have to admit your initial post here in the thread intrigued me: insomnia/Theta jump/etc. I wasn't sure you had responded to the poster you had meant to? hang a left's 'complex' and you start in with insomnia/meditation, like you've taken a left with hang a left. :)

then as it began to make sense, i felt compelled to ask you about your experience. I appreciate your response, and the potential thread in the forum you've mentioned with more of your insight. Note, as a star-less member here i will be able read, but not be able to respond to the forum post. This will have to serve as my post-thanks to both.

btw, the meaning of your user name was not lost on me, i noted it in the past reading your posts here.

that "Many" don't get to post .....just saying that folks time is limited and there are other sites out there where folks post today because there's more Liberal Sites out there than when DU was one of the FEW where folks on the Left had a voice and a forum.

I think that what one would hope to get...might not even understand the post because they are "just learning" and maybe don't know quite what to say.

122. I feel the same way.

I know there are the "popular" posters here on DU, and there's nothing wrong with that, but I sometimes feel that those of us who are under the radar don't get noticed one way or another.

125. Responses depend on the topic at hand
and who's around when the thread is posted. Depending on what's being discussed and when can make all the difference between a thread with 50+ posts or one that sinks quickly into oblivion. It doesn't mean you or the topic isn't worthy of attention. It just may not register with a lot of posters at the time you put it up. I respond to threads that I can form some coherent opinion about. Many times I'll start a reply but not able to compose my thoughts I'll move on and read others. The threads I merely view are still valid subjects.

126. I hear ya.
The only response I usually get is the sound of crickets chirping.

Not that I'm complaining mind you...they're kinda cute, and um ((clears throat)), I'm starting to like my little cricket friends.

:P

127. I've had many a post sink immediately to the bottom
Seems like the number of commenters to my original posts will be in exact inverse proportion to the anount of time I spend writing them up.

Once in a while you post something that takes off, but that's not often.

So, I feel ya!

128. Oh the Irony!
A post on not getting any post responses, gets more than 100 responses.

Congratulations:toast:

130. Well, I'm not responding. And it is your breath. Whew! it's awful.
Oh, BTW, there are about 103,110 user registrations last I looked, errr, just now.

There are a lot of people, a lot of ideas, a lot of subjects. Also, a lot of people read and don't respond. I'm one of them. I like to peruse and flit on.

Put an intriguing enough post, and people will respond. Ramble on and on with poor English and bore the reader, probably not.

Big blocks of text always turn me off too.

Even Will Pitt, the master, if he doesn't do good "paragraphing" will send me to bored-land.

This is a board where we do flit from one post to the other. If I'm not particularly interested or if it has been said really well, I'm not going to respond.

Nothing against you or your post(s).

Don't take offense.
