Why doesn't McCain remove himself...
...off of his government-paid-for health insurance plan?

Why don't all Repubs and Blue Dog Dems, who stand in the way of "Medicare-For_All", just drop their socialistic coverage and go strictly with the private sector that they are working so feverishly to protect?

1. You DO know that they pay for their insurance...and it's the same as every other federal employee?

2. How much do they pay out of pocket?
Edited on Sun Dec-13-09 11:28 AM by SHRED

My understanding is that they and their dependents are fully covered.
No paycheck deductions.

And for that matter...since the concept of insurance itself is one of collective shared risk and a collectively shared payment pool then you would think that form of "collectivism" would be way too socialistic for them.
You would think they would just pay for treatment straight out-of-pocket in order to be true to their "free market" ideals.

3. Depends on the plan they choose.

But it's the same as every other federal employee.

"Members of Congress receive retirement and health benefits under the same plans available to other federal employees. They become vested after five years of full participation."

4. At a $170K+ a year salary, it's affordable to them.

7. Most maintain two residences (one of them in D.C.) on that salary.
I'm not going to claim that they make a pittance, but $170k isn't as much money as you seem to think it is.

9. How many of them live on just their gov. pay?
Edited on Sun Dec-13-09 11:38 AM by hobbit709
A small percentage of them have no other income.

11. Agreed.
I'm just opining that $170k/year is not the king's ransom that some think it to be...especially in places like D.C.

5. IT doesn't matter. No health denial company is ever going to toss out a claim for the McCain family.

8. Mostly because none can. FEHBP does not allow refusal for preexisting conditions.
Nor does it allow a company to treat any one person differently than the rest of the pool.
