Thirty-Two Chinese Workers Killed In Molten Steel Accident - 04/20/07

By Doug Cunningham

A horrific accident has left 32 workers dead in China. More than 25 tons of molten steel spilled into a room where workers were in the midst of a shift change after the pouring pot slipped off of a rail. The bodies of the workers were charred beyond recognition. DNA tests will be needed to determine identities. Four workers have been detained pending an investigation at the plant.

Strange this wasn't on major news here in the US.

Molten steel kills 32 in China plant
BEIJING April 18 (UPI) -- At least 32 workers died Wednesday at a steel plant in China when tons of molten steel fell on them from a ladle that snapped off from the blast furnace.

Chinese media reports said the incident occurred in a workshop of the Qinghe Special Steel Corp. in Tieling City in Liaoning province in northeast China.

The China Daily, quoting the State Administration of Work Safety, said the steel ladle, used for pouring the metal, suddenly dropped and spilled about 30 tons of molten steel.

The statement said those responsible for the incident were "under control" but did not elaborate.

The newspaper said industrial accidents killed more than 127,000 people in China in 2005, and that the government plans to spend about $60 billion in the next five years to improve safety at coal mines and other dangerous workplaces.

The accident occurred at the Qinghe Special Steel Corporation in Tieling, a city in Liaoning province, when a steel ladle "suddenly dropped and 30 tons of the liquid spilled out into a workshop five meters away," according to a statement posted on the Web site of the State Administration of Work Safety.

Industrial accidents killed more than 127,000 people in China in 2005. Last year, state media report that the government will spend nearly $60 billion over the next five years to reduce the high death toll in its coal mines and other dangerous workplaces.

6. Same reason that a bunch of stories weren't on US TV, or were well buried after a quick report
Bombings in Iraq? Don't worry your little head... http://www.tbo.com/news/nationworld/MGB2YTPMO0F.html

52 dead in Somalia? What, you say? http://www.governmentcontractswon.com/search.asp?type=dc

INTENTIONAL pet food poisoning? Anyone?? Helllooooooo??? http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=3058844

Recalled meat (it was a YEAR OLD) in California and elsewhere... http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/california/la-me-burgers21apr21,1,1914709.story?coll=la-headlines-pe-california

But come on, we just HAVE to hear that Alec Baldwin tape for the HUNDREDTH time, now, don't we?

And we really need to know all the details of that whackjob at VT who killed all those people, over, and over, and over again.

What gets on national TV here is what the corporate prowar sponsors want you to see. It's not government censorship, it's corporate censorship. And those corporate entities are in BED with the government...and we know what that's called, don't we?

It's all informal, but it is what it is. Quite sad, actually.

8. i was called into work on a sunday morning at the melt shop
that i was labor pooling that week. labor pool guys never worked on sunday but it never crossed my mind on why i was called in. i walked into the shack and was told to clean slag off the floor in front of number three...later at break i found out that a guy was burned over 90% when part of the ladle wall fell in and blew out molten steel through the inspection "hole" in front ladle. we got word that he died before our shift was over.

the melt shop is one step before the door of hell.

my heart goes out to their loved ones

9. Hopefully it was quick.
If they were lucky, they got directly immersed in the molten steel, in which case the 2700 degree steel would vaporize them instantly.

If they weren't lucky, they merely got trapped by the steel, and the intense heat broiled them alive. Bad way to go.
