Church's controversial billboard defaced

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- A New Zealand church said its controversial Christmas season billboard depicting Joseph in bed with Mary was defaced with brown paint.

Archdeacon Glynn Cardy, vicar of St. Matthew-in-the-City Anglican church in Auckland, said someone dumped brown paint Thursday on the faces depicted on the billboard, which pictured a despondent-looking Joseph in bed with Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the caption: "Poor Joseph. God was a hard act to follow," The Independent reported Friday.

"We're trying to get people to think more about what Christmas is all about," Cardy said. "Is it about a spiritual male God sending down sperm so a child would be born, or is it about the power of love in our midst, as seen in Jesus?"

However, the billboard drew criticism from a number of Christian groups after it was erected Wednesday.

10. I always figured that any deity that can speak the universe

into existence can say, "Poof! Mary's knocked up." No need to actually get down with her.

But, that was before I figured it out.
