About That Surge In Health Insurance Share Prices This Week...
Edited on Sun Dec-20-09 02:35 PM by stopbush
IIRC, on MTP this morning, Joe Scarborough said that profits for health insurance companies reached "a 52-YEAR high on Friday."

Friday evening on his show, Bill Moyers reported that health insurance share prices reached "a 52-WEEK high on Friday."

Who ya gonna believe?

On edit: feel free to correct me if I'm misquoting either source.

Hell just froze over.

on edit: I read the OP wrong. Chalk it up to age and increasing crankiness over this whole HCR mess.

8. Oops, my bad.
I knew there had to be something odd about it --- misread the year vs. week part. And I read and reread trying to figure it out. My brain is not working.

Sorry....I should have known better. And of course, Scar is the one exaggerating. Whodda thunk it?

4. No, Scarborough said "52-YEAR" high, and Moyers said "52-WEEK" high.
Big difference.

6. And, one was profits and one was share prices. Another big diff.
I do need to find the MTP vid and confirm this. I'm going off what I believe I heard this morning when viewing the show. The Moyers footage is posted at C&L.

9. Wouldn't a 52 year high probably mean an all time high?

10. High profit and zero risk
If pay outs rise or profits decrease, raise rates. So much for Capitalism theory.

11. UPDATE: The transcript is up for today's MTP. Here's what Scarborough actually said:
Edited on Sun Dec-20-09 04:37 PM by stopbush
"And as Howard Dean said, and this is a devastating fact, insurance companies' stocks reached a 52-year high on Friday after this so-called reform bill got its 60th vote."

So, I was right on the "52 year" biz, wrong on the "profits v stock prices" thingy. Obviously, years v week is the biggest issue.

BTW - we bitch about the fact that Rs love to throw out this bogus shit and no one challenges them. I would point out that Markos Moulitsas was sitting right next to Joe and didn't say a word when Joe pulled that 52-year figure out of his ass. It's not just the MSM guys who don't have the info at their finger tips. It's the most-progressive guys out there who appear to be just as ill prepared to shoot down RWTPs as anyone.
