The Copenhagen waste of time conference shows how badly we need a more powerful UN
This stuff should have been decided already. A conference to let member nations know what penalties there would be could have occurred for the photos and such. No imput from the national leaders just pictures and let them be told what is expected of each country and what will happen if there is not compliance.

PS ---- For our leftwing Birtchers reading this, no one but you and a dying group of right wing kooks care about as you put it "Merica's precious sovereignty."

1. Uh huh. And how would you propose to get a "more powerful UN"?

2. Call me what you like
but I do believe in American sovereignty, as well as the sovereignty of other nations. I have no interest in being dictated to by the UN, with the exception of treaty obligations.

3. You believe in the sovereignity of other nations? Good, so you're on board for a stronger UN?
'Cause right now, the United Nations amounts to "The United States calls the shots, no matter what" which is more or less the direct opposite of sovereignity for anyone besides the United States.

6. No, it isn't.
Even when the US doesn't pay its fees, it expects to call the shots. It's a personal opinion that we should move the UN to a neutral country like Sweden.

9. Would Sweden going to foot most of the bills?
Would any country besides us pay the UN's way?

8. Really, now?
The idea of the UN is that all nations are equal partners in the world.

Is it actually like that in practice, FLDCVADem? Of course not. And it's sure not Jamaica dominating the UN is it?

Though, that might not be a bad idea, come to think of it.

5. UN-Total joke.
Tell us, who will make-up this all-powerful group that tells the world what to do or "suffer the consequences"?

7. Well, gratuitous insult aside,

The fact of the matter is that the world was looking to the US for some sort of leadership, direction. After all, we do need to recover some sort of respect after the debacle of Kyoto. Instead, despite promises made, opportunities were lost, time and political capital was squandered by this administration. So the climate continues to tank and nothing much is going get done.

But hey, we've got some sort of "change" coming out of the Congress soon, eh.

As far as a stronger UN, in some areas it would be nice. But the trouble is that the UN is simply set up to be a talking shop and you would have to entirely remake the institution in order to strengthen it and we all know that's not going to happen.
