Matt Taibbi, Bill Moyers and Robert Kuttner: Why Can't Democrats Do Anything Right?
"BILL MOYERS: Something's not right here. One year after the great collapse of our financial system, Wall Street is back on top while our politicians dither. As for health care reform, you're about to be forced to buy insurance from companies whose stock is soaring, and that's just dandy with the White House.

"Truth is, our capitol's being looted, republicans are acting like the town rowdies, the sheriff is firing blanks, and powerful Democrats in Congress are in cahoots with the gang that's pulling the heist. This is not capitalism at work. It's capital. Raw money, mounds of it, buying politicians and policy as if they were futures on the hog market.

"Here to talk about all this are two journalists who don't pull their punches. Robert Kuttner is an economist who helped create and now co-edits the progressive magazine THE AMERICAN PROSPECT, and the author of the book OBAMA'S CHALLENGE, among others.

"Also with me is Matt Taibbi, who covers politics for ROLLING STONE magazine where he is a contributing editor. He's made a name for himself writing in a no-holds-barred, often profane, but always informative and stimulating style that gets under the skin of the powerful. His most recent article is "Obama's Big Sellout," about the President's team of economic advisers and their Wall Street connections. It's been burning up the blogosphere. Welcome to both of you."

1. Matt Taibbi's idea of dropping the bill and waiting 8 years is just great for the uninsured and
those with pre-existing conditions. They can wait, right?

How many uninsured die per year from not having access to health care - multiplied by at least 8? How very progressive.

3. And who's going to provide this healthcare, anyway?
The insurance companies that made healthcare the mess that it is today? That isn't very progressive, either.

We're all Bozos on this bus...

4. Right. Better to just wait. How very kind. The uninsured don't really need it.

5. well, they've got to wait 5 years anyway
so all things considered, that's not really much difference.

6. You think with Taibbi's plan that means something goes into effect in 8 years? Hardly.
He is just saying give up until then. It would probably be more like a couple of decades.

It is pathetic to see people who consider themselves Progressives no longer caring about covering the uninsured.

7. well, that's not it at all...people should have access to healthcare
health care should be affordable and accessible to all, and insurance companies should be shown the door.

This bill is not about that at all. It's about creating a massive revenue stream for insurance companies.

And I really can't believe that progressives support that.

8. I guess if your priority is punishing insurance companies over covering the uninsured, protecting
people with pre-existing conditions, ending annual and lifetime limits on insurance benefits, subsidising insurance for the working poor then you would want to kill the bill.

Priority - punishing insurance co's v. providing insurance to the uninsured and protections to everyone. It is not a perfect world. Sometimes you have to choose which is more important to you. That is where we are.

10. a foolish choice, in my opinion
because it will not accomplish what you desire. There will still be uninsured people, and now they can be fined.

That's great.

9. K&R for Moyers, although I'm not a fan of Taibbi.
