This is why Republicans want to hype the Northwest Airlines incident

Gitmo transfer to Yemen in doubt

WASHINGTON, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- U.S. plans to send Guantanamo detainees to Yemen must be re-examined in light of an attempt to destroy a Northwest Airlines jet, lawmakers said.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutalla, the Nigerian man charged with Friday's bombing attempt, allegedly told authorities in Detroit that al-Qaida members in Yemen engineered the explosive device found sewn into his underwear, ABC News reported Sunday.

The Obama administration had planned to send 80 Yemenis held at Guantanamo home in the coming months.

Congressional Republicans have long opposed the plan because Yemen has a relatively weak government, fierce al-Qaida insurgencies and is the ancestral home of Osama Bin Laden.

That instability and the attack against the Northwest jet now has persuaded a leading Democrat to reconsider plans to transfer detainees to Yemen, Politico reported Sunday.

1. Hmmm since Richard Reid came from GB
did the republicans suggest that we investigate that and find out why they let this guy loose.

2. Um, yeah, I can see the connection.
:sarcasm:

You know, it is funny. I keep missing the Republican rants about wanting to investigate all right-wing militant white American men because of the multitude of terrorist events they have perpetrated. I'm sure they should be available SOMEWHERE on the Internet, but I can't find them. Gee, I wonder why.

3. Doesn't matter where we send them.
If a nation imprisons me for no good reason and without due process, I promise you I will exact my revenge. Imagine these people and what they must be thinking of American style justice. Can we expect any of them to get back to their lives and harbor no ill will toward us?

8. That's a good reason to keep them locked up forever
All we need is ONE released detainee to be solidly connected with a terrorist incident prior to Election Day 2012, and President Obama can kiss his re-election goodbye.

10. We ignore the rule of law for electioneering?
Unless of course the US Constitution is something to be ignored for political expediency. This just all boils down to the original wrongs committed by Bushco. You don't declare war on a mindset. You lead the world by example by respecting the rule of law going back as far as the Magna Carta. We got hit bad on 9/11, so go about it the right way and work with the world community and round up people you have evidence on and prosecute them. Sounds quaint, but it works. When we go about it the wrong way, it just feeds a never ending tit for tat. That strategy also erodes our freedom here at home. Now we engage a circular argument which goes round and round. The way to stop the madness is to send Bushco to the Hague and prosecute for war crimes. Never happen, I know. But there you have it. End the madness.

11. We make the best of a bad situation that we were handed
The original guilt for detaining them lies with the Bush administration.

Or, we can just release everybody, including the most dangerous, and watch American cities burn because of it.

Which action do you think the American public is going to be less critical of?

12. Fear Mongering is the American way
"Home of the brave" afraid of a few goat herders. Hells angels are more organized and more dangerous than any of these goat herding cave dwellers, yet America has to be terrified about them. I say bullshit.. I am so sick of people like you fear mongering and trying your best to terrify Americans. What's in it for you? Are you just that much of a coward?

5. You are correct, ProSense.......
the Republicans have politicized this incident, and folks are allowing them to do it.
Of course it has everything to do with the President's promised agenda.
Why did Congress vote down funding to close Gitmo? Same reason....because the Republicans
used fear to politicized the funding.
