78% in poll call for giving illegal immigrants path to citizenship
USA TODAY

WASHINGTON - While Congress and the White House remain divided over what to do with the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants now living in the United States, a new poll shows the American public appears to have reached a consensus on the question.

A USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken last weekend of 1,007 people found that 78 percent of respondents feel people now in the country illegally should be given a chance at citizenship. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., who is drafting legislation to grant illegal immigrants an opportunity to stay in the United States, said, "As with so many issues, the American people are ahead of Washington on immigration reform. They know that only a plan that offers a path to earned citizenship will fix our broken system."

2. That's hilarious. Many other polls say just the opposite.

3. Sorry, don't believe that poll.
I wonder about the wording of it. I don't think it's that high.

4. Americans want to have a workforce come in from another country........
to take the remaining jobs in manufacturing, construction, trades, retail, transportation, etc. I don't believe it for one damn minute. Sen. Kennedy is a damn traitor to the middle class workers.

5. I would
have to know a whole lot more about that poll before I would believe its numbers are credible. Frankly, 78% is soooo contrary to all the other polls I have seen I have seriously doubt.

8. Legalization won't work if you keep the border undefended as it is.
Otherwise, in another 20 years, you're going to have to legalize another 12,000,000 immigrants who came in by smuggling themselves in.

9. Its also
worth noting that they (illegal immigrants) ALREADY HAVE a path to citizenship, however it seems many do not want to take the time and put out the effort to do so.

10. Are there any recent polls that reflect a different outcome than this one?

These results sound about right to me. Most of the people I know feel this way. Even the Republicans. Except the outwardly bigoted ones.
