Is it just me or has anyone else noticed Bush is slurring his speech?
As one well acquainted with slurred speech and it's causes it seems to me that his speech has changed in the last few months. He's always been loose with words and malapropisms but the pronunciation was more or less crisp. Not anymore. He looks like Boris Yeltsin (RIP) at the worst of his public performances.

1. I noticed. Definitely.
Edited on Mon Apr-23-07 01:58 PM by SpiralHawk
It stood out for me when I watched the video of him talking about how noble, gallant, intelligent and honest he finds Gonzo to be.

He was excruiatingly unconvincing.

You would have to be a Total Kool Aid freak to think he actually believed in what he was saying about Gonzo.

And in the midst of it, several Highly Suspect Slurs of Speech?

WHAT'S WRONG WITH COMMANDER AWOL ?

39. Re: Speech
He is n un-recovered alcoholic and under enough stress will drink. He also has features of fetal alcohol syndrome. I understand his mother did not stop drinking during her pregnancy with George Jr.

He is a failure at every endeavor he tried, and will not stop until he reeks much more destruction.

The problem is that we can't stop him.

2. maybe, but I think he's completely losing his mind
the speech last week in Ohio where we rambled from one topic to another and talked about being despised. Maybe some part of reality is beginning to touch him.

10. The speech was about Laura choosing the carpet
in the oval office, and other unrelated matters. I read parts of it. I think it took place midweek. Try searching by carpet. The carpet shouldn't make it into too many pResidential speeches.

34. Probably. I only remember that
it just didn't fit into the speech, and the speech did not seem to be appropriate for the audience.

Something about people wanting to be loved. No one runs for office thinking he wants to be despised. Something like that. It was a few days ago.

I'll search around little bit. If I find it, I'll post a link here.

4. What I've noticed
is he is taking longer and longer pauses between the phrases in his sentences. I've always been annoyed by his cadence, but the pauses seem to be even more pronounced than before. I personally think they've got him on meds. He's not doing the coke jaw thing that was so pronounced around the time of Katrina. Who knows what kind of psychotropic cocktail they've got him doped up on. (Not to mention the booze.)

29. He used to have no pauses at all
If you watch video of him back when he was governor of Texas, he spoke quickly, without pausing after every phrase like he does now. The difference is striking. He seems to have changed his speaking style after he became president. I wonder if it was intentional.

9. My observation has been his movement even further away
from pronouncing "to". All I can hear is "tuh". Perhaps he has always been this lax with his enunciation, but I fear the trend is a reflection of his growing disdain for putting on the pretext of always having to show concern.

13. Update to OP.
It's particularly noticeable when you compare speeches from the Gubernatorial races in Texas to the Presidential races and to the last month or so.

There were few malapropisms during his race for governor, more in the presidential races and now even the misuse of the language is badly delivered. Also, as noted up thread, there are longer pauses between phrases. He also goes off-script more often.

Yeah, I think he's having a bloody mary morning every morning . . .

How many is that since he and his republicon cronies stole the election and democracy from the American people?

The deterioration has continued and now it's apparent to everyone but the delusional or stupid.

I see it as alcoholic encephalopathy. I think he has continued to drink on the sly, and given his performance at the G-8, on the not so sly.

He's a sick man.

The guy is quite obviously either bombed or doped out of his skull, ALL the time. Substance abuse easily explains every one of his bizarre character traits.

The only thing is, when it finally becomes obvious to EVERYONE, there will still be more than 20% of this country who won't care. He may be a drunken fool, but he's their drunken fool.

37. He sure fucked up that "injured by a cedar" joke the other day.
It was an outlandish joke to begin with--potentially very offensive. But any gifted public speaker, which George Bush used to be, should be able to pull off an edgy joke if he can connect with his audience and make the joke part of his "regular guy" ethos. Bill Maher does this all the time. Bush has done this on occasion, too: telling a collection of millionaire's "I call you... my base."

The right way to pull off the cedar joke would be to make it self effacing, the "I'm just a regular klutz" approach. I'm sure Bush has PR people working on this core message all the time. But the way he bumbled thru the delivery, the cringe-inducing polite silence while all the other people in the photo op stood around not reacting to the joke, tells me Bush wasn't connecting with them.

The whole point of a president visiting wounded troops is connection-making, comforting them by listening to and thanking men who've endured horrible and in many cases permanent bodily harm for the country. This is about as receptive an audience as Bush could ask for. Most of those guys really want the president of the United States to come and validate their sacrifice. It should have been a cake walk letting those guys know that they're appreciated on a personal level.

But for some reason Bush wasn't able to reach them on that human level, wasn't able to related to them that they could relax, that the camera's were secondary to the real mission that day of honoring their sacrifice. For whatever reason George Bush that day was not the performer he has been in the past. A stressed out or otherwise impaired speaker may not be able to make a solid performer-audience connection if he's for some reason out of touch with their reception of him. This is public speaking 102. If George Bush blows a photo op like this (which he did apparently long before he made his awkward and tasteless comparison of his tree hugging to the wounds of Iraq and Afghanistan vets) then something somewhere is terribly wrong.
