The End Of TheConservatives.Com? Wash Times Site Appears Dead
The End Of TheConservatives.Com? Wash Times Site Appears Dead
Justin Elliott | December 31, 2009, 8:54AM

TheConservatives.com, the Washington Times Web project that was billed as an ambitious "multiplatform" venture to allow "the Joe the Plumbers of the world to speak up to major thinkers, like Newt Gingrich" appears to have gone silent.

The site, rolled out in September, is no longer loading. Its Facebook page stopped updated the morning of Dec 23, as did the site's Twitter feed ("House Blue Dog: We'll Cave on Health Care, Too #tcot #right").

Amid the disintegration of the conservative daily paper, Times management said in a Dec. 2 press release that TheConservatives.com would actually be an area of focus and growth as part of a new online strategy. But the site was conspicuously absent from a news release yesterday on the latest staff departures and the Times' future.

A Times spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.

When the site launched in the fall, then-Times editor John Solomon told the Washington Independent he envisioned TheConservatives.com's role as an aggregator of the best content of conservative blogs and a place where readers could create their own content.

"We want to create a new medium where things from Townhall and RedState and Twitter and Facebook are all aggregating up, and the most interesting ideas from grassroots, from the meritocracy of ideas, bubble up, using technology," he said.

En route to that goal, the site picked up an impressive lineup of contributors: Gingrich, whose first column was "The Conservative Hour for America Has Come;" anti-tax activist Grover Norquist; Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC); Pennsylvania Senate candidate Pat Toomey; and Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI).

4. They also don't think much...
They prefer to have their "thoughts" fed to them passively by conservative talk radio.

6. I always find it humorous when they refer to conservative "thinkers"
Edited on Thu Dec-31-09 10:01 AM by Gman
There has never been an ideology such as conservatism that is so devoid of real ideas and is so full of unsubstantiated, or at least very poorly supported propaganda and is used solely for the enrichment of those paying for and putting out the (and I use the term only because I have to) ideas. It's important to note the "those paying for" roots of this ideology as there is no conservative ideology, only unsubstantiated propaganda that is paid for by usually corporations but also by groups like anti-abortion groups.

The only deep thought that goes into conservative ideology is how to react and respond to cries of "that's fucking ridiculous" and act like a persecuted victim.

9. They have much more pressing concerns:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/12/30/AR2009123002444.html?hpid=topnews

The Washington Times slashed its 170-member newsroom staff Wednesday, laying off its top editor and scores of reporters, editors and photographers at the 27-year-old newspaper.

The Sports and Metro sections will cease to exist as stand-alone entities after Friday's edition, numerous sources said, and layoffs in those sections neared 100 percent.

At a somber staff meeting at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, the newspaper's management did not give an overall number of layoffs and did not spell out the fate of various sections and areas of coverage. Instead, after hearing from Times President and Publisher Jonathan Slevin and an official from the human resources department, employees were told to pick up packets that revealed their fates....

so happy to see these propaganda organs fall.
but i just have to wonder if they are folding because they had become too conspicuous, and now they need to start something new. a new disguise.

12. "an aggregator of the best content of conservative blogs"
Well that explains why it went bust. There is no best content of conservative blogs, unless hate, bigotry. etc. are considered bests.
