Let's say, for the sake of argument, that I'm a corpulent, racist loudmouth with shit for brains
And every day, I'm paid beau coup bucks to spread lies and hatred on the radio, without any consequence whatsoever.

I can even get away with ANYTHING... like abusing the lax laws against abusing prescription drugs in the state where I conveniently set up shop.

America has made me a success. A God-damned winner, despite all my awful shortcomings.

Yay, Fucking me!

But take one second to think about this:

Isn't this just really a sad, fucked up statement about how much American society really sucks?

As long as people like Rush Limpballs are made into role models and valid sources of opinion, we'll always keep going in the wrong direction as a country.

That's because too many fucking people here either don't know, or don't care, to do any better.

1. The price we pay for being a "free" society
People choose to listen to that garbage...unless you're in the military; then Armed Forces Radio forces you to listen

Happy New Year!

3. Even then, when I was in Germany, I turned off the fucking radio
And played tapes!

Besides, there were plenty of German radio stations to listen to

9. no, it's not the price we pay for being in the free society.
the price we pay is that it's LEGAL for this idiotic and damaging views to get airtime, and yes there will always be more than a few idiots drawn to this crap.

however, the fact that corporations fund these views heavily; the fact that the media insists on presenting these as anything other than lunatic fringe, radical, damaging, idiotic and repugnant views; and the fact that politicians and other public speakers aren't brought up on charges for their hateful and violence-inciting speech -- that is NOT the price we pay for being in the free society. that is the price we pay for being in a BOUGHT AND PAID FOR society, bought and paid for by corporations and people far, far richer than you and me.

16. It's the price we pay for living in a corporatist society.
Rush is only a mouthpiece for his masters.

2. No more or less a broad statement about American society than Father Coughlin.

6. "Hain't we got all the fools in town on our side? ...
And ain't that a big enough majority in any town?"

Coughlin and Limbaugh and a thousand like them are just visible signs that Mark Twain was right, (ir)regardless of the era.

11. Reminds me of an olld exchange
Voter: Every thinking person will vote for you.

Adlai Stephenson: That's not enough. I need a majority.

14. Stevenson was a truly intelligent man.
Guess that is why he never got elected to be President.

I was watching Nova the other night, a show on evolution, and was constantly reminded of how devolved we seem to be.

5. Whatever radio stations he's on are the only ones coming in loud and clear
He's the catharsis for the people behind clear channel and others that give him the mega megawatts.

As long as our public airwaves are hogged by the Rupert Murdoch types and corporations with agendas that are contrary to the public interest we will keep going in the wrong direction as a country

7. This is his undoing.
“Those whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad.”

Just another rich man destroyed by hubris.

He actually thinks he is immune to the ills other men suffer.

Corpulent drug abusers just don't live long enough to retire.
