Brooklyn Woman "Stoked" for New Year's Eve After Massive Transplant

Not everyone had a terrific 2009, but for Brooklyn resident Kristin Molini it was a life-changing — and likely life-saving — year.

The 22-year-old is doing great following a rare operation that replaced a whopping five new organs after a rare condition, intestinal dysmotility, paralyzed her digestive system. The condition was so serious she had not ingested food since 2005 — subsisting solely on an IV — and she wasted away to a mere 74 pounds.

"I couldn't move. I was going from the bed to the couch," she told the New York Daily News. "I didn't see outside for a while. I didn't think I was going to make it."

However, everything changed this past May when she received a call informing her that she had a donor match, and she quickly took part in a surgery to receive a new liver, stomach, pancreas and large and small intestine during a complicated 13-hour operation that has only been performed about 300 times worldwide since the 1980s.

The problem is being able to afford it.

It does not measure up. But money is indeed a big part of the problem. And nothing is broken all the time, and I thought this was a nice story.
