Senate Gearing Up To Move Jobs Bill

Senate Democrats hope in coming weeks to wrap up what they say is about five months of work on job-creation legislation and appear set to ignore a House-passed measure and pass their own bill.

A group of Democrats, led by Senate Majority Whip Durbin and Senate Democratic Policy Committee Chairman Byron Dorgan of North Dakota, has worked on the package since returning from the August recess and staffers have continued work since Christmas, with the goal of moving the bill shortly after final Senate passage of healthcare legislation.

That could occur by late January if the House by then has modified the Senate-passed healthcare bill and sent it back to the Senate.

Durbin and Dorgan, aided by staff, are working to narrow a list of 121 job-creation provisions suggested by senators. They have grouped proposals into a handful of categories -- small business jobs, infrastructure work, green and energy-related jobs and public-sector employment -- according to a Senate aide.
