Korean student at Auburn assaulted by 4 men
Edited on Tue Apr-24-07 11:59 AM by CatWoman
AUBURN, Ala. — Authorities say an 18-year-old Korean student attending Auburn University was assaulted by four males outside his dorm room.

According to Auburn Police Capt. Jerry Holder, the student, whose name was withheld, was beaten up shortly before midnight Thursday at Lane Residence Hall.

The FBI was called in and agents are trying to determine if the attack was a hate crime.

It occurred three days after the horrific shootings at Virginia Tech.

Holder said the victim was reluctant to discuss the incident or seek treatment, but others convinced him to report the attack.

Police said the student, who arrived at Auburn about a month ago, suffered minor injuries.

Auburn President Ed Richardson called the assault — quote — "disturbing" and said university officials will monitor the student's recovery and help him return to class.

He also said the school is working with authorities to identify the suspects.

person out of a lineup of Asians? I don't think this had anything to do with VA Tech.

For the next few minutes... (CW will remember THAT announcement from our "duck and cover" daze! ;-) )

China, Japan, Korea: What's the difference? Do they all look the same, or are they very distinct? Is there any truth to the stereotype, or is it ignorance? Well, enter the exam room here and find out for yourself. We have eight tests in different categories such as face, art, architecture, and food. Remember: We are not here to make a statement; it's a question. Good luck and enjoy.

39. Massively different history.
Just ask a Korean about how the Japanese have traditionally treated them. There are ethnic Koreans living in Japan for generations who are still not citizens.

43. Some Japanese people have trouble telling the difference at times...
I can often distinguish Japanese/Chinese/Korean by facial contours but there is some overlap between the ethnicities, particularly the Japanese and Korean since they share a lot of common ancestry. There are some common, archetypical Japanese face types but when I lived in Japan I saw people with all kinds of appearances. Certain body language cues also give the difference away but they aren't always apparent.

8. The eternal defense of racism-defenders: "It's just a coincidence!"....
... It's the eternal defense for good reason (to an idiot, at least): it can never be *completely* proven false.

In reality, the "it's just a coincidence" defense is just the setup - the punchline is "we should give these nice young men the benefit of the doubt".

Every time. Without exception.

11. Nice try at putting words in my mouth. Get off your soapbox.
I didn't say it wasn't racism. I said that I doubt anyone picked this kid out and said "Hey get that Korean for what his people did at VA Tech." Maybe it was, but I'm not jumping to that conclusion based on this story.

Think a little bit or ask more questions before you throw around slurs like that.

14. It is exactly because many non-Asians cannot differentiate among Asians
that all Asians are at risk for retaliation like this. It is just coincidence that the attackers "got the right kind" of Asian.

And to reiterate a post I have made a couple of times - right-wingers see "them" as all the same so attacking any Asian will do to satisfy their blood lust. Smerconish (Imus replacement on MSNBC) encourages just this kind of racist revenge.

the same is true about Saddam - any middle easterner with brown skin would do to satisfy the blood lust of the wingnuts in retaliation for 9/11.

Furthermore, that's what was behind lynching in this country during the turn of the century.

30. No, it's because some people are assholes.
I can't tell the difference between the various Asian groups. Yet, none of them are in danger of being attacked by me. I don't go around attacking people--regardless of their ethnic makeup.

But, some people are assholes.

32. I'm not disagreeing with your premise. What I'm wondering here is if the Korean student
got jumped because of racism, plain and simple or as a specific retaliation for VA Tech. I'm not making the jump that he was attacked strictly as a retaliation because of VA Tech. Maybe he was simply attacked because he was something other than white. The writer in the report appears to make the logical jump that simply because the student was Korean he obviously was attacked in retaliation.

This news story is very limited in the details, it just seems that they are making a stretch to say it was VA Tech related. It's easy to get hysterical and blame everything on one event in the heat of the moment, but is that one lunatic the cause of this particular attack? I don't see what anyone is basing a definitive conclusion on, let alone calling me a racist because I won't make the knee jerk conclusion that everyone else seems to be.

His attackers probably had no idea whether he was Korean or not, but it didn't matter. And yes, there is a difference between Koreans, Japanese, Chinese, and there are differences within these groups as well.

http://www.al.com/news/birminghamnews/index.ssf?/base/news/1177402833311620.xml&coll=2

His cousin took him to the hospital when he saw that his face was swollen to twice its normal size on one side.

I would like to think this is not a racially motivated crime, but it sounds bad.

18. Auburn has almost 1,000 foreign students out of 23,000 total
and hundreds of those come from Asia. The EE graduate program has more Asians than Americans. Many of the professors in the technical fields come from Asia and the Middle East.

P.S. This sounds like the work of some drunk frat boys. Jerry Holder will go after these bastards.

19. Regretfully, there are far too many people in universities...
...who don't need to be there, and I'm not referring to the Asian gentleman.

This is a long-term result of the American shift taking universities away from their original purpose of developing whole, thinking human beings and are now more like technical schools in that a lot of students enroll simply to acquire higher paying jobs afterward. As a result, their school's ranks are overflowing with pedestrian motives and outlooks.

This vocational school approach has destroyed a great deal of what once made universities unique and hallowed places and I don't know whether we will ever get that back again.

person that looked "Korean". It just so happens this guy WAS Korean. Although this could have been a crime that had nothing to do with the VA Tech shooting. I hope they arrest the four that would jump a single individual like that. That is so sad.
