5 years ago this morning, DU lost Khephra.

He deserves to be remembered.

I'm quite familiar with his work, and it saddened me to learn of his passing. Peace, my friend, whom I admired from a distance.

The trolls were few and folks were so incredible happy to be able to get information. Remember the rolling C-Span Hearings threads? Keph always started them and other DU'ers pitched in and we would go all day with some of them.

That was long ago and far away when we STILL BELIEVED that our CONGRESS really worked for us! A different time...but the work goes on..

to have Khephra here, even for just a day. Things, they are a'changin (and not always for the good).

Despite my low post count, I've been checking in to DU for a long time, mainly as a read-only participant. Still, I remember his screen name and many of his illuminating and insightful posts.

Nothing happened anywhere in the world that he wasn't on it. More reliable than most of the real news orgs especially in those days when every other world out of their feeds was a lie!

in the picture looks like Lynnsin's good friend Ramsey who I met in person on several occasions and haven't seen post here in a long time.

What I remember most about Kephra was that he was the only other geezer at DU I knew that liked Marilyn Manson in concert besides myself.

anyway thanks for posting the picture and the remembrance. I just can't believe it's been 5 years though. time flies...

I was around, but it wasn't until after his death I found what a wonderful man he was. What an incredible activist-- he did leave the world "a little bit better" as they say

A one-man news bureau, tempered with compassion and wit.

One was Andy and I can't remember the other name. He was big in posting the toons and was active in questioning 911. In fact, I have one of is shirts saying question 911. I believe he died in the hospital from an infection. My mind has gone blank on his name. Help anyone?

Jeff Madson? Or a name very similar? He was also a great guy. Died of an infection, as you said.

I always think of him, too, when people mention Kephra.

He cared about everybody and truly believed that working together we can make all the difference in the world.

His support for Dr. Dean in 2004 made me realize what a good man the good doctor is.

Miss you Khephra. You helped make DU into DU. Thank you, infinitely.

I used to PM him when I was out of the loop on something (happens a lot to people who work nights) - he'd always answer immediately - I adored him

we were a much better (and better informed) community because of him.

I used to go to LBN first thing every day, because of Kephra.

I'd heard about Khephra, but was not very aware of him, unfortunately.

But I did feel the enormous grief and sorrow at his death.

A sad time...

I am sorry not to have gotten to know him...

I remember discussing comics with Kef, too...

And I'm glad he's remembered here.

This place has never been the same for me without that incredible voice.

I don't read LBN as faithfully now as I did when he was alive.

As I understand it, he had a lot of problems in his personal life. But he had purpose. I hope he knew that in many ways he was a big part of the soul of DU. He certainly was the soul of LBN.

Many of us, including me, can go through bleak periods in our lives. We think everything we do is worthless and that we have accomplished nothing.

Kephra kept going in spite of his problems. He showed us what was inside of him. In real life, many people would have overlooked his devotion and intelligence. It took a message board to show him at his best.

I learned a lot from him, and it wasn't simply Latest Breaking News.

As I recall, he died at his computer. I still miss him.

Thanks for the post-- keep his memory here green. He was top-quality people.

Yes, DU lost a lot when his voice was silenced. He and Salin were the best reasons to read DU back in those days and now both are (mostly) gone.

Me and Kheph and some others marched against the war. Kheph made the march.

Great guy. He was LBN for a period of time here on DU.

5 years, but hey we did make him a headstone :shrug: right Kheph?

I really would have married him, too, if he'd have had me; if I hadn't already been in a relationship. When I proposed half-jokingly, he told me he was fat. I told him I knew and I didn't care, as the other guy I was flirting with weighed 400 lbs. I married the other guy instead, and that guy always thought if I'd married Keph first it would be he who had died...

Divorced now. In a new relationship with someone a generation older than me.

So it goes.

Khephra was everywhere. He was more up to date on the Latest News than was the AP. I remember him well.

I thought he was brilliant. He made me want to be part of this thing we call DU.

and more useful, None of the noise-crap-BS look-at-me gibberish that plaques this realm. Just good, informed and helpful hard work, After I began frequenting DU regularly, I soon realized that something posted by Khephra was worth reading,

Kept wondering what was different about LBN. Then a few weeks after I came back someone mentioned the loss of him and I realized why LBN was not the same.

I was still living in Florida at the time. Keph and I were both insomniacs and it sometimes seemed like he and I were the only ones on DU in the early morning hours. Although I never met him in person, we had quite a rapport going on the pages of DU for quite some time. Yes, it was quite a shock, and he's still missed to this day. :-(

He really did make DU a place to go for news.

DU, especially LBN, has not been the same without him... He'll always be missed and in our thoughts. ;(
