Democrats launch counterattack to save Harry Reid's career

Democrats are preparing to throw the race card back in the laps of Republicans as part of a counter attack designed to help save Harry Reid’s political career.

First, Reid’s allies plan to distribute the NAACP vote ratings of Republican senators who have scolded him. The data will be made available to editorial boards, cable programs and the blogosphere — including votes on minimum wage, community-oriented policing, education funding and HIV/AIDS programs.

Separately, the Congressional Black Caucus plans to issue a new statement Monday, defending Reid and brushing back Republicans.

“Senator Reid’s record provides a stark contrast to actions of Republicans to block legislation that would benefit poor and minority communities – most recently reflected in Republican opposition to the health bill now under consideration,” CBC Chairwoman Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) said. “I look forward to Senator Reid continuing to serve as Majority Leader to guide this important agenda through the Senate.”

These moves to turn the race issue back onto Republicans is risky, yet it shows how Reid and his allies are ready to pull out all the stops to help the majority leader recover from his disastrous comments about Barack Obama being “light-skinned” and having no “Negro dialect.” The comments were revealed in the book “Game Change” by journalists John Heilemann and Mark Halperin.

with the record that Senate repubs have on civil rights, the prospect that they can dictate who should be ML, is obscene. Aside from that, Reid isn't even close to being the most ineffectual or unprincipled minority or majority leader in modern history. Only someone startlingly biased or ignorant would make such a claim: Lott, Frist, McConnell, anyone?

And you are utterly and completely clueless about Reid's objective record. For crissakes- this is a guy who crossed over and voted with Republicans on far right legislation!

He got held hostage to the likes of Lieberman- who's STILL in his chairmanship despite campaigning for Obama's opponent.

Dole in 1993 proved more capable with his slim filibustering minority than Reid has with 60 votes!

Reid's an embarrassment- and ought to have resigned for "health reasons" several years back.

better still if we were able to retain the seat- though that's not likely to be in the cards.

best chance to keep that seat. That said, it would be great if Dem leaders ask him to step down after his hoped for re-election in exchange for their support now. He can't really step down till after the health care debacle plays out - and on that point, I'm in the kill the bill camp (thanks Harry - and Barry, and Joe, and the entire rogue's gallery that has brought this crap to us).

What is a fact is that the repubs are trying to remove Reid from his post as ML. For a myriad of reasons, their success on this endeavor would not be good news.

The hypocrisy is so typical now. It's not about racism, it's about power and "one-upmanship". The GOOP feel they have 8 years of scores to settle with Democrats and if they have no scrupples about how they do it. They have no pot to piss in regarding anything involving race...even in playing "poutrage".

Here's hoping the wide history of rushpublican racism is put on display...from Strom Thurmond to Trent Helmethair to all those ugly Obama posters and photoshops we saw at the teabagger parties last year.
