MSNBC Extends Smerconish Tryout to Friday
Edited on Tue Apr-24-07 03:40 PM by RamboLiberal
That's bad news IMHO. Damn, I'd rather have Imus back.

Michael Smerconish's MSNBC try-out has been extended through Friday.

The simulcast was originally set for Monday through Wednesday. Now it's running all week, Dan Gross says.

MSNBC says a variety of fill-in hosts will be appearing in the 6 to 9am time slot in the weeks to come. An NBC tipster says Tony Kornheiser is the next host, but that's not confirmed yet.

Don't know much about Kornheiser but this sounds encouraging. DU'ers can you fill in?

Politically, Kornheiser describes himself as a "Blue State Guy". Appropriately, he and Wilbon are close friends with Democratic political advisor James Carville, who has appeared several times on PTI.

Anthony Irwin Kornheiser (born July 13, 1948) is an American sportswriter and columnist for The Washington Post, as well as a radio and television talk show host. Kornheiser has hosted The Tony Kornheiser Show on radio in various forms since 1992; co-hosted Pardon the Interruption on ESPN since 2001; and served as an analyst for ESPN's Monday Night Football since 2006. He is well known for his savage wit and sarcastic humor on print, radio and TV.

1. Why don't they hire Kornheiser? He knows how to be funny without insulting people.
Of course he is doing a great job on WP radio. I guess this would be a step up - not sure.

23. IMO
Tony would be crazy to give up his WaPo/Monday Night Football/PTI gig for the chaos at MSNBC. I'm a Kornheiser fan and wouldn't wish that fate on him.

4. Smerconish is AWFUL!
Watched him yesterday, with guests Jon Anderson of Yes (with some 15 year old who could flat-out PLAY the guitar!). All Smerconish could do was kiss up; nothing substantive to say. Today he had Ted Nugent on, and was just awful.

I miss Imus.

16. No one liked his "humor"--it was his truth that was appreciated.
Who else from the RIGHT is calling for impeachment and suggesting that the 2DumbCREW should be hanged? Who else calls Gonzo a liar who should be fired? Who else calls Condi an idiot? There are plenty of lefties doing that, but those guys aren't reaching millions and millions of fellow Republicans each and every day. No one reached the GOP with an antiwar message like Imus.

He was the only Republican criticizing the administration. That's why people enjoyed the program. Now there are NONE who are doing that.

And there won't be any, either, because GE, a top 100 Pentagon contractor, won't allow it.

acted in haste.

20. Imus is yesterday. Time to move on. He was not that funny and he was in many ways
a name dropping pompous ass. And a whining hypochondriac. And all of that fake cowboy stuff. And talking about his "working ranch." Working ranches don't have multimillion dollar fund raisers. Sorry I think what he has done with sick kids is great but his bragging, his whining, and his insults got old.

9. I love Tony Kornheiser
He is great on Pardon the Interruption and I am one of the few that love him on MOnday Night Football. But he is a sports guy. So how does that fit with MSNBC?

13. Back when Tony had his ESPN Radio show
I would listen to him from time to time. His show was very good and expanded far beyond the limits of sports. He had some very interesting and thoughtful insights into social and political issues and I can remember thinking he would make a great political discussion host.

18. Just like Keith Olberman....
a sports guy can branch out and do great things. I look forward to Smirk-onish getting the boot. I sent four nasty emails from my different email accounts to complain about how much he sucks and I am not watching him ever.

22. Difference is Kornheiser is not as mean as Olberman. Olberman has a real
mean streak sometimes and isn't above taking a cheap shot based on little information - much like Imus in some ways.

and that sure worked out great for MSNBC and for intelligent viewers like us.

12. Ahhh...no one is watching!!!!!!!!
I won't. They can extend the guy to the second frigging coming, and I'm not tuning in.

I go to the CSPAN call in show, watch the guy read the paper, and listen to the idiots calling in. Every so often you hear someone with a nugget of intelligence who can express themselves cogently and who makes a good point, and that makes the activity worthwhile. But more often, it's just a shake-yer-head exercise, unfortunately. I get a lot more done, because I don't focus on the tube as much anymore.

17. It's one of those -- be careful what you wish for
I had the love/hate thing going with Imus. At least his show had substance. I hate Smerconish. I wish they'd consider Stephanie Miller or a left leaning radio personality.

25. As much as I dislike Smerconish, I would not wish Imus back on MSNBC or on me.
Did he ever have anything better to say about anybody other than to call them a "weasel"? HE's a weasel. And he treated the MSNBC staffers like one too.

Kornheiser could be good. Like Olbermann, he's a funny guy who comes from sports and doesn't take himself too seriously.
