We felt the quake in Jamaica
I was walking into a lecture on Reparations by the great Pan-Africanist, the 93 year old Dudley Thompson. I just discovered that Haiti took the major hit since my phone was off. This is too sad.

For the record we are terrified of January and quakes - Jamaica has been hit by two major quakes in January. The great Kingston quake was on January 14th decades ago but we had a Cat 5 in 2004.

Damn I feel so sad for my Haitian neighbours.

4. We just felt a little tremor
the real quake was in Haiti. I'll find out in a while of our South East Coast - St Thomas got the worst hit here.

8. CNN just said the tsunami watch has been canceled, so at least
you won't have to worry about that. Just stay safe.

15. We weren't on tsunami watch
we have the Mona passage between Jamaica and Haiti - very, very deep water - that would have dissipated the threat. Haiti, Cayman and the Bahamas were under threat.

7. Our news people are speaking with people in Haiti
several homes collapsed and lots of people have been killed but they have no news from the capital - no power, phones down as well. Many people are in the street,

6. I'm not surprised you felt it, it was a shallow one
that would propagate easily through rock.

The strongest quake I ever felt was a 4.1 centered near Chicoutimi, Canada. My building in Boston was swaying enough to toss some yarn off the shelves and make my cat walk like she'd had a few too many.

The patients were still freaked out when I went to work later that night.

5, then St Thomas, Kingston & St Andrew 4 was mild.
Wish someone would tell our TV station that the tsunami watch is off.

22. Good! CNN isn't getting any footage or official reports. They were able to
speak with a man who lives there who said he saw a large plane taking off so the runway at the International airport seems to be okay (he couldn't tell what type of plane), he saw a helicopter lift off about 15 minutes after the initial shake, and hadn't seen any evidence of rescue efforts (as of about 10 minutes ago). He lives on a hill overlooking the entire city out to the sea. Lots of dust from collapsed buildings.

I've been through several quakes here (biggest was 6.8) and I always remember a geologist saying that quakes don't kill people, buildings do. Another reporter was saying that their buildings aren't retrofitted as those here in quake zones are, that they're essentially concrete slabs stacked on top of one another. :(

I'm glad you're okay and wish the very best for your friends. :pals:

You were the first person I thought of when I heard the news. Glad to know you're safe.

CNN is reporting major devastation, several aftershocks of 5.5, 5.9. Power out, roads impassible, some damage at airport. Hospital has collapsed in Port-au-Prince. Govt. buildings damaged. US has been unable to make contact with our embassy there, as phone lines, cell towers are down.

Embassy is ok. State Dept has not been able to contact Haitian government yet. Task force at State is preparing to send aid. Condition of airport is unknown at this time. They are thinking that it will be first light before any assessment can be done.
