MEXICO CITY — Mexico City lawmakers voted to legalize abortion Tuesday, a decision likely to influence policies and health practices across Mexico and other parts of heavily Roman Catholic Latin America.

The proposal, approved 46-19, with one abstention, will take effect with the expected signing by the city’s leftist mayor. Abortion opponents have already vowed to appeal the law to the Supreme Court, a move likely to extend the bitter and emotional debate in this predominantly Catholic nation.

“Decriminalizing abortion is a historic triumph, a triumph of the left,” said city legislator Jorge Diaz Cuervo, a social democrat who voted for the bill. “Today, there is a new atmosphere in this city. It is the atmosphere of freedom.”

Nationally, Mexico allows abortion only in cases of rape, severe birth defects or if the woman’s life is at risk. Doctors sometimes refuse to perform the procedure even under those circumstances.

1. At this rate, we'll pass each other on the way
Mexico decriminalizing it, the US criminalizing it.

Wake me up when we're officially a developing nation.

Judging by the thread on infant mortality rates in the South, we're pretty close.

2. One more place where U.S. women (if they can afford it) can go when the USSC overturns Roe v Wade
Because once they do away with Roe v. Wade they will not be satisfied in just letting states make their own laws. Then they will turn their attention to overriding legalized abortion in the blue and purple states.

4. It is why I give pause to the notion
that the walls being built aren't just to keep "them" out...they will be utilized to keep women in.

5. I have already told friends that I will start a Travel company when Abortion is made illegal
I will charge the rich folks a ton of money for "spa trips" to facilitate their abortions...
and then I will use the excess profits to help poor women....

3. This is a good thing...
The way things seem to be going, U.S. citizens are going to need someplace to go to get abortions.
