“Be my little army. Be my young army of young people.’’ ~ Scott Brown
To my fellow Massachusetts dems who are voting for Brown because they disapprove of the health care bill. Think twice about this. We can fix the health care bill in time. We cannot deal with this crap again.

Boston Globe

Students everywhere love assemblies - sometimes for the presentations, often because they simply get to get out of class. But the middle-schoolers at Florence Sawyer School in Bolton may be rethinking that one, after a recent morning visit from US Senate candidate Scott Brown that could rank as the downer assembly of the year.

Amid brightly colored banners that said “We are the world,’’ “Walk the path to your dreams,’’ and “Hop to it!’’ Brown spoke gravely to the adolescents about the “debt ceiling’’ and “unfunded mandates.’’ About a cap-and-trade plan that he said might force the school to lay off teachers or cut activities to pay energy bills. About the Taliban and Al Qaeda potentially joining forces to move on Pakistan and obtain nuclear weapons.

Then the truly cheery part began.

7. Perhaps. Maybe Brown could encourage the students to do as
he did and pose naked in magazines. Feh!

3. Isn't there some law against making students listen to campaign speeches
by a single candidate?

6. There certainly should be. Middle schoolers are too young to have to deal with this crap.
It is hard enough as an adult on this site..

19. Remember how the RWers were so freaked out that
the POTUS was going to be giving a talk to American schoolchildren about staying in school and studying hard. "OMG! He's going to indoctrinate helpless children!"

And yet they think it is perfectly acceptable for a RW candidate to give a campaign speech to kids who are a captive audience in school.

12. That is just disturbing.
Yet I doubt any of the talking heads who made a big deal up about the NJ school that sang a song wishing the new president well (within the first month he had office, iirc) will say a word about the actual wording of a candidate sounding like he is trying to indoctrinate. Disturbing.

I have watched many candidates of both parties address students. Generally they keep heavy handed rhetoric out of these speeches - with a sense of awareness of the audience. But that was pre-teabagger days.

14. From the comments to the article
"So...just to be clear, it's OK for Republicans to actively campaign in a public school, but it's not OK for the President of the United States to broadcast a "stay in school and study hard" message?"

I want to know how a Republican candidate speaks to a captive middle school assembley? And the candidate tells the kids - "go home and tell your parents to vote for me." I would be wicket pissed (they say that in Masss) if I were a Dem parent to find out my kid had been subjected to this horseshit without my express permission.
