Marines exit Iraq in first wave of US forces out

AL-ASAD, Iraq -- The base loudspeaker no longer wakes them up with calls for blood donors; armored trucks sit idle in neat rows. The U.S. Marines who stood at some of the bloodiest turning points of the Iraq war are packing up and leaving.

Among the first troops to invade in March 2003, and the first to help turn enemy insurgents into allies, the Marines will be the first major wave of American forces to go as the U.S. military begins a withdrawal to be completed by the end of next year. For them, as for the rest of the U.S. military, this has been the longest war since Vietnam.

At their peak in October 2008, an estimated 25,000 Marines were in Iraq, mostly in the country's western Anbar province. Now only about 4,000 remain. They, too, will be gone shortly after the Marines officially hand over responsibility to the Army on Saturday.

"The security and stability that exists here is well within the means of the Iraqi security forces to maintain," Maj. Gen. Rick Tryon, the Marine commander in Iraq, said in a recent interview. "You don't need United States Marines to do this at this point. So it's time, and it's timely."

1. Good news!
Sadly, others will be along shortly to try to turn this into another attack on Obama. Shameful.

11. Good news- but you spoiled it with your comment.
Sometimes you should just let good news be good news, without the snark.

13. Wonderful!
It's moving along. Not fast enough for the immature, but we know it is a logistical nightmare just like everything else. And here is some great progress.

14. Yes We Can!
Thank you President Obama for following through on your campaign promise. The sooner we leave the wrong war in Iraq is all the better. We can then focus our attention on catching Bin Laden and destroying the Al Qaeda in Af/Pak.

17. Isn't this sort of misleading? They are only talking about Marines...
Don't get me wrong I am happy they are leaving, but these numbers are not accurate for our entire military.

19. How is it misleading?
Nothing at all was misleading.

The headline said the Marines were the first out.

The entire story was about Marines.

How the fuck is it misleading?

20. 6 years and 4373 American lives too late, since they shouldn't have been there to begin with.
152 of those lives on BO's watch.

Are these troops coming home, or getting ready to go to Afghanistan?

<snip>

Besides, he added: "Afghanistan is calling."

22. Meanwhile, back at one of the Wars....
in the shell game of pursuing permanent US bases in the ME and de-stabilizing as many countries as possible in achieving these PNAC-inspired ends, the drones continue their lovely work and this just in from Afghan-Pak:

By YAROSLAV TROFIMOV, ALAN CULLISON And HABIB ZAHORI

KABUL—The Taliban launched a coordinated attack on the Afghan capital Monday, paralyzing the city for most of the day as they set off explosions, took over buildings, and attempted to disrupt the swearing-in of new cabinet ministers.

Gun battles, punctuated by bomb and rocket blasts, raged in the usually heavily protected center of the city for more than four hours. Smoke billowed from a shopping center overrun by the insurgents just a few yards from the presidential palace...

...Two civilians and three security personnel were killed, and 71 people injured, said Afghan Defense Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak. Seven insurgents were shot dead in the fighting, he added, and an unknown number of others died in the suicide blasts.

"To be able to infiltrate at such depth, into the inner periphery of power here, is a mind-blowing achievement" for the Taliban, said Afghan parliament member Daud Sultanzoi. "If you look at the pattern, they are steadily escalating in their coordination and their capability..."

U.S. to continue drone attacks despite Pakistan's disagreement: senator
by Zeeshan Niazi

ISLAMABAD, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- The United States will continue the "effective" drone attacks in northwest Pakistan's tribal region near the Afghan border even if it has no agreement with Pakistan, a U.S. senator said here Friday.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, visiting Senator John McCain said the U.S. congressional delegation came to show the solidity and sympathy to the victims of the terror attacks in Pakistan but the strikes with unmanned aircraft will not stop as the U.S. needs to root out extremism from the region.

"We are always with Pakistan and the people of Pakistan and our relationship does not have time limitation," McCain said.

He said the use of drone strikes against suspected Taliban militants in Pakistan is an effective part of the U.S. strategy..."

Question: Which insurgency/civil war/revolution, etc. in a foreign land was solved/removed/eliminated by modern military action such as the US tries to mount in places like Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan?

Thanks, I'll take my answer off the air.

PS Save the snarks for someone that believes the propaganda
