43. Adjacent fault line a short distance away. Probably energy dissipation


The Haiti quake occurred on the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault (labeled EPGF), and this one was on the fault labeled OF on the north end of the Cayman Trench. As you can see from the image, they're all a part of the same major fault complex.

It's similar to the relationship between the San Andreas and the Hayward faults in California. They're separate fault lines, but they're two portions of a much larger common fault system.

8. I keep waiting for the big one on the east coast.
I'm between 2 of the most active fault lines east of the Mississippi. The last large quake leveled Charleston,SC in the 1800's. We're waaaay overdue.

and 65 miles from the nearest city.

There's possible damage from this one but it's unlikely to be catastrophic.

They can afford better construction in the Caymans.

12. CNN reporting that earthquake in Haiti is acting as a "trigger".
Different fault lines, but release of pressure in one area causes build up of pressure in another. Still no reports of damage.

17. Just called a friend in Grand Cayman
He felt quite a shake and people are very, very nervous. I suggested that he took the rest of the day off and head for the beach. :D Didn't feel this one in Kingston.

14. Existing volcanoes have been smouldering for sometime
I flew over Soufrière Hills Volcano in Montserrat a few weeks ago..that was still smoldering..I'm betting we will see activity from existing ones before we see new ones

37. The thing with Yellowstone is that it has EQs all the time but most are in
the 1-point (Richter) range. But in the past several days that EQs have been in the 2 to 3+ point range. And they have been shallow, around the 5-6 mile range.

Having a Earthquake in Michigan would be strange. Michigan is not the Earthquake capital of the world by no means. I cannot image really a Earthquake here. In the same aspect, you state Myrina there is a fault in Indiana and that is less than three hours away from my town in Michigan. Kinda of got me worried now.:yoiks: Wonder if I need to be?

52. Look up the New Madrid fault ...
... central Indiana got shook about 3 years ago, April, due to a small quake that hit south and west, toward Illinois. No serious damage here in Indy but I thought someone was trying to break into my house when I heard the rattling windows. My dogs were anxious for about 30 minutes before it happened ... but yeah, an earthquake in Indiana just isn't something that happens every day.

38. I have an application on my laptop at home that
logs every time there is an earthquake. The activity increase is amazing. I did notice several Yellowstone quakes yesterday that were all over 3.

25. Anyone think this is the beginning of something bigger?
I heard that there is a formation under the sea where a large rock is precipiced at the edge of a "cliff." If the rock gets knocked over, (like it might with aftershocks) they fear it will have a tsunami effect on the east coast of Florida. Anyone heard about it?

If the Haiti earthquake had not occured, this one in Cayman island would have gone unreported.

This movement in Cayman island is not news. Earthquakes occur every day. Today and tomorrow, and the dayafter, 5.8 earthquakes will occur in several places in the world. Will CNN treat each one as breaking news? Univision wouldn't shut up with a 6.0 earthquake in Guatemala that caused zero damage yesterday.

Not a problem around Alaska, big problem in the Caribbean. An estimated 200,000 people or more may be dead as a result of a recent one.

Same thing with tornadoes. In the summer in the Midwest, tornadoes are a problem and they're always news, but when several dozen are spawned by the same storm system, the news is all over every channel. Same with severe winter weather- not so bigt an issue in unpopulated areas, huge issue if a storm dumps two feet of snow on, say, Chicago.

Magnitude's 5.8, not 7.0 like the Haiti quake (remember the Richter scale's logarithmic).

Sounds like the quake could cause some damage, but not on the scale of the Haiti quake.

The Caribbean plate is really moving around for some reason. I am betting it is from increased Pacific plate pressure on the Cocos plate, then on the Caribbean plate. I suspect the "Big One" in California is not far off.
