Screw you Doug Flutie.

For the non-football fan out there, this post will make no sense. But as a football fan and a Democrat, I'm pretty offended that Doug Flutie has been out there campaigning for Scott Brown and his gang of teabaggers.

I realize that most athletes are rich, spoiled and misogynistic -- which means that they will undoubtedly gravitate toward the GOP. That said, Flutie always struck me as different, which is why this stings. His work on behalf of autism has been profound and deeply personal to him as a parent. And for anyone who was in New York during Hillary Clinton's first run for the Senate, this story from 10 years ago won't be much of a surprise.

Hillary Rodham Clinton closed out her 16-month quest for elective office last night at a boisterous rally in a union hall in Midtown Manhattan, saying the outcome of her bid for the United States Senate should be determined by the issues, not the name-calling that dominated the final weeks of the campaign.

At the early morning rally in Buffalo, Mrs. Clinton appeared jubilant and confident as she kept the beat with the band, 10,000 Maniacs, and then used a string of football metaphors in her speech to make sure her audience of 1,000 had no doubts that she knows what is important in Erie County.

Doug Flutie, the Buffalo Bills quarterback, took the stage first, speaking glowingly of the first lady's commitment to children and health care, and even taking a turn at the drums as 10,000 Maniacs welcomed her to the microphone with a deafening version of ''These Are Days.''

Ten years later, he's stumping for a candidate who's main issue is defeating a health care bill that will provide coverage for millions of Americans. Sad.

He's free to say whatever the hell he wants. I never said that he shouldn't (and if I did, it still wouldn't be a First Amendment issue). I'm saying that I am disappointed that he turned out to be another typical jerk, and that it's really sad that he's using his star power to try and influence an election toward someone like Brown -- particularly in light of his past advocacy and background.

You can hate Flutie because you dislike the Patriots, Bears, Chargers, Bills, the CFL, or the USFL. Or if you're a U of Miami fan and you've never forgiven him. But because he's campaigning for his choice of candidate? Were you not aware that this country supports more than one political party?

as much a matter of who he believes is the best choice for a given office. The guy appears to be an independent, aka "the majority". He may be against Coakley rather than for Brown. Coakley has a reputation of being a persecutor rather than a prosecutor and that may be his issue with her. Just a guess.

But I don't think it's a good idea to hate all people who support the other party either. It is kinda aggravating though when you like somebody and think they might be on your side, and then you see them campaigning for Bush. I became an anti-fan of Dick Vermeil for that.

when people vote based on their favorite celebrity's endorsement. Who gives a rats ass what spoiled think?

That doesn't mean that people don't vote that way, and considering how things have been looking in MA, every vote may count.

Oh, ew. I'm Canadian, and I was a huge fan of his when he was in the CFL (Go, Stamps!), so it bugs me that his time up here didn't impart any universal healthcare wisdom.
