Heavy turnout reported in Mass. Senate race

News outlets in Massachusetts are reporting heavy turnout for a special election.

From the Patriot Ledger in Quincy, Mass.:

A steady stream of voters filed into Furnace Brook School in Marshfield to cast ballots, with about 50 people from the three campaigns holding signs and the school parking lot near full. At 11 a.m. the turnout was more like a general rather than special election, with voters buzzing about the candidates and their choices outside as they entered and left.

From WBZ-TV in Boston:

In contrast to the light turnout for the party primaries last month, there are already signs of a heavy turnout. In the late Sen. Ted Kennedy's district in Barnstable, they're estimating a 60-percent turnout by the end of the day.

Boston Herald:

More than 23,000 people voted in Boston during the first two hours of voting in the special U.S. Senate election to choose a successor for the late Edward M. Kennedy.

MetroWest Daily News of Framingham, Mass.:

A steady stream of voters cast ballots this morning in Ashland and Framingham. "When we got here at 7, there was actually a line of cars on East Union Street,'' said Barbara Chisholm, who was holding a Martha Coakley sign outside Ashland High.

WBUR in Boston:

In Quincy, election officials said turnout is so far comparable to a general presidential election. Similar turnout was reported in East Weymouth, as the parking lot at Pingree School was full as the polls opened at 7 a.m. “This is like a presidential election!,” a poll worker in East Weymouth said.

9. wake up call.
I think the Dem base is mad. And it should be. Obama has not been as forceful as he could have been . He has cut deals with big pharmacy companies. His war position is puzzling. i know you cannot tear down the war machine in one year but? What is really going with all these wars? If anybody out there can help with the war question let me know. There is a lot more to it than fighting a bunch of extreme radicals. These radical spend maybe one penny to our thousands of dollars. Where does that get us. Shore up the ship before it sinks.

Edited on Tue Jan-19-10 02:11 PM by Tippy
I personaly can see a difference between the Base and the Angry Dems..the Base, is usually made up of older Dems, like myself, I have been voting for over 40 years...I'm very interested in protecting my rights and the rights of others. I follow politics and politicians closley I know would never post on a discusssion board negative things about The President such as we have seen on DU. I may be angry but I try not to be so vocal about it..When people are hurt are angry they strike out, somtimes saying things that arfe against their own best interests in the long run. Read the Transcript I linked...it says it a lot beter then I ever could...

8. Although I heard someone on the radio this morning (progressive
station) that said he didn't see much activity for Coakley on the ground there, this gives me hope.

If Coakley wins, what a shot in the arm!

Thanks for posting!
